nail extensions

by Maggah

Can anyone recommend a place for getting fake/acrylic nails done in Shanghai? Are there any in the Tao Bao city mall at 580 Nanjing Rd?
Secondly (& nothing to do with fake nails.....) I'm looking for a restaurant, Chinese food please, with an interesting setting such as an old courtyard house, lots of woodwork or something old & traditional.
Ta.

I don't have nails to get done, so I can't help you. Actually, you may be able to get a lead to a place at the cosmetic counters in the big department stores.

Now for a restaurant, I recommend the Secret Garden restaurant on Changle road, just 100 meters west of Shanxi nan lu. See my Shanghai page for a review. There are other restaurants reviewed there. For something really unusual, Shanghai Memory Reataurant, or Heng Shan Moeller hotel on the corner of Shanxi and Yanan roads.

Quite a number of restaurants that would fit the description. Are you also looking for colonial decor, or only Chinese? How many people are eating and what price range per head?

Re: nail extensions

by Maggah

Ellyse;
price per head isn't really a problem but having said that obviously I'd rather avoid places where prices are silly. I realise that's not a very objective comment but let's just say "value for money" - so that probably excludes anything where it's incredibley trendy and you pay 500Y for a huge plate with a tiny piece of beautifully presented food in the middle......
I don't know how many people are going.
It's the surroundings I'm interested in (and the Chinese food, obviously!) - so colonial - why not? Or Chinese.
Ta.

Meh, really too many of those restaurants in the French Concession for me to name. There's quite a high concentration in the area around Shaanxi Nanlu metro stop. I think I've got one of them on the VirtualTourist Shanghai Restaurants page so you might want to have a look there.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Get Out and Visit a Restaurant.

by gaolei

Eating Good food is the most important activity in Shanghai. This city offers every type of eating experience available. You can have Chinese food from every province, Brazillian, Itallian, Mexican and Genuine American Hamburgers. Don't stay in the hotel to eat. Get out there and eat something! Shanghai is a great walking city. The streets are safe and the vistas constantly change as you walk the streets. There are shopping and eating surprises around every corner. When you are done walking for the day, grab a taxi, they are safe and cheap.

A place to browse for Chinese gifts

by cheezecake_deli about Yu Bazaar

Yu Bazaar is full of little shops, mostly geared for tourists who descend en mass to the area to visit the nearby Yu Gardens and Huxinting Teahouse. The shops here mostly sell local products, including handicrafts, tea and clothes. Prices are not low since most shoppers are tourists. There are some long-established reputable shops here, however, particularly the jewelry shops. Silk items, tea, teacups, chopsticks, fans, any local product really... Varies - must bargain.

Good Menu and Fab Health Drinks

by HooptheWorld about Element Fresh

Lovely interiors to both that I ate at...very modern and hip without being too over-the-top cool but, rather, with a sense of sophisticated modern. The staff is friendly and competent and the overall feeling is comfortable. Also, very clean with pleasant, warm lighting.. The sandwich was good and all the other dishes I tried were also good; the healthy drinks were the best I have tasted....as in even the concoction with spirulina tasted yummy. The weekend breakfasts are great....eggs or pancakes or their other treats....consistently good quality. Very pleasant choice for a, basically, Western-European theme when you just need something familiar yet a little different.

Bund Sightseeing Tunnel

by lindyz

Im not exactly sure why they call it this, because you dont get to see any sights on the tunnel ride! Its really just a tunnel under the river with a light show, the whole ride probably lasts for about 5 minutes tops and it is indeed a rip-off!!! BUT ... most tourists to Shanghai will still do it, as we did!

Entrance and return ticket costs 50rmb = about $9AUD, and when you compare that to a return subway ticket costing 6rmb, you can see why it is slightly over-priced! I will say though that the light show is kinda spectacular, weird and tacky, all at the same time. I did take some pics which turned out ok, but still which dont give the full effect of the lights. The tunnel comes out at Pudong, very close to the Oriental Pearl Tower, and the entrance on the Bund side is very close to the Peace Hotel. If you walk down Nanjing Road towards the Bund, you simply cant miss the brown signs to the "Bund Sightseeing Tunnel".
