Where to go in the surrounding of Shanghai?

by laszlok13

Dear all,

I'll be in Shanghai in April and will have 5 free days, when I would like to make a few trips in the surrounding of Shanghai.
Could you suggest a few nice places to visit?
I'm especially interested to see natural habitats and animals, but would also visit cultural sites.
As I have a hotel reservation for my whole stay in Shanghai one day trip tips would be the best.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards

For one day's trip, Tongli, Zhouzhuang (water town), Suzhou, etc, could be your choise. Hangzhou is a very beautiful city, 2 hours away from shanghai, one day in hangzhou is also OK, but it's too hurry. Staying 2 days and 1 night in hangzhou is better.
Inside shanghai, I recommend the Cheng Huang Miao, and the Shanghai old town, Yuyuang Garden, the residence for Jews During World War II, in Hongkou District.

5 days are not much, I'll say two days in Hangzhou, 2 days in Shanghai and one day Suzhou.

Dear all,

Thank you all for the replies and the tips.
I was not clear enough. Actually, I'll be in China for 2 weeks, from this 9 are working days in Shanghai. Thus during this time I can see Shanghai, and now I would like to know where could I travel in my free time (i.e. 5 days).

Best regards

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Long Hua Temple

by Jiang_Cucha

Long Hua Temple Longhua Temple is a famous Buddhist monastery with the longest history in Shanghai area. The temple was built in the Sangharama five-hall style of the Buddhist 'chan' sect of the Song Dynasty. Sangharama means' the popular court', or 'the monks' court', which originally referred to the site of the monks' living quarters, but, later, to the whole complex including the land and all the structures of the monastery.

Candied fruit...

by cheezecake_deli about Stalls along the Bund

Vendors along the Bund sell candied fruit (bing tang hu lu), a traditional snack (and an acquired taste for most I think). Each stick costs RMB5. They also generally sell steamed corn and coconut juice. Candied fruit.

Visit the Shanghai Museum

by bsfreeloader

At just Y20 a pop, the Shanghai Museum has to rank as one of Shanghai’s more worthwhile attractions. The various galleries, which include pottery, calligraphy, stamp, and artwork galleries, among others, are arranged by dynasty and include informative displays. On rainy or especially hot days this is good place to kill a few hours and gain some insight into Chinese culture.

"Happy New Year Everyone!"

I spent 5 weeks in the USA and Thailand for the holidays. I'm back in Shanghai now. Phuket and Bangkok were fantastic! I hope to return to Thailand soon and visit some of the country's other interesting places. While I was in the states I picked up a copy of Lonely Planet SE Asia on a Shoestring.
My Chinese classes start again in a couple of weeks and I'm really looking forward to them. How quickly I've forgotten so much. I think I ought to brush up a bit before classes start or I'll be lost!
