President Obama stayed here!
Although we did not stay here, would of if we could. Great location, a first class hotel, nice freindly staff and the buffet breakfast at Tables, just one of the six in house restaurants is fantastic! ( see my restaurant tips )
Unique Quality: The views of Shanghai are great, they display some very nice artifacts and have some great private area's. We were here just one week prior to President Obama's stay, so the security was on high alert but our freind William, who we know from NZ, now back in Shanghai with his old job as food manager, gave us a good look around and what a hotel!

The Best Hotel and City Center
This is where my aunt lives and works. It is incredible. It’s a hotel, a residence for ex-pats (I didn’t know what that was until this trip), and a business center. This place has everything (grocery store for foreigners, drycleaner, several restaurants of varying price and quality, travel agents, business offices, bank, post office, gym, spa, and more)…..I cant get over how lucky we were to stay there.
To visit China during the day, and to come home to an apartment just like home at night...lucky, lucky, lucky. If you live here, you don’t even need to leave…It’s practically its own city.
I don’t think it’s a true taste of China, but it sure is one hell of a great pit stop between ventures out into the real country
Unique Quality: It’s the Ritz….Shanghai Center…it has everything so even if you don’t stay here, but are a foreigner and need a dose of home….or help…I am confident you can get it here.

Portman Ritz-Carlton - How Rockstars Travel
The Portman Ritz-Carlton is a first class all-the-way hotel, from the bellhops to the concierge to the gym to the breakfast.
The veiws are great.
Unique Quality: If talking to the cab drivers it is known as the "porta-man". They will not know it as the Ritz or Ritz-Carlton.

Best service I have had in China
Wonderful hotel located on Najing Road. In the middle of all the actions. Smaller rooms than other but have everything you need, including HBO, Cinmax channels on TV. Restuarants are not that good, but the room service is very good.

Pricey but Great
Splurged and stayed at the Portman for 2 nights. Rooms are NOT huge but I was treated to a high floor (27th??) and got to take great pics.
Unique Quality: Fabulous service, extremely helpful concierge.

Unique Quality: The hotel was extremely comfortable - although not the class of Ritz Calrton over the world. But it is still a 5 star hotel, large in size, and friendly service.

Shanghai Hotel / Guide
Hi everybody.
I am visiting shanghai - first week of february.
please guide me about some hotels to stay.
5 star or 4 star. Preferably near to the city.
Is there any resorts / furnished villas available?
How can i find a reliable english speaking Guide in shanghai ?

We stayed at Ritz Carlton, Shanghai. There are other five star hotels in the area that you can choose from. I think you wont have any difficulty in finding english speaking guides in Shanghai. You can try China Panorama if ever. Have a nice time in Shanghai!

Look in the Jing An District of Shanghai. This is near the old French concession area. The top hotel in the area is the Portman (Carlton). Across the street is the JC Mandarin And down the road is the City hotel, Hilton and Equatorial. All of these are good hotels in an area full of shopping and restaurants with English menus.
It looks like the Heng Shan Moeller is closed at the moment. If you find it open, it is a very unusual place to stay in the heart of the French Concession. It is an old, large mansion built in 1930 by a man who raised race horses. The design is European fairy tale It is a very comfortable place to stay in 1920's splendor.
While you are there, be sure to eat at Bi Feng Tang. They have an English menu with pictures. The duck jaw is excellent!

Any price range in mind? If not, some of the nicest you could try are Le Royal Meridien, JW Marriott and Radisson New World. All 3 are extremely centrally-located, at People's Square.
Resorts/furnished villas won't be located in downtown.
