Take the ferry at sunset...
by Freiner
Take the ferry at sunset across the river to Pudong. It last's only some minutes, but you get a beautiful view along the riverside and you rub shoulders with the locals, coming from or going to work. On the Pudong side, find the bus going to the Oriental Pearl Tower. Going back, you may take the new subway. Look out for the last train, the service stops early.
Shanghai South Station
by aukahkay
The spanking new and futuristic Shanghai South Station is the point of departure for cities south of Shanghai including Hangzhou. Shaped like a flying-saucer, the station looks more like an airport terminal rather than a train station. It is more orderly than the main Shanghai Station in the north part of the city.
Nanjing Lu
by anssbg
If you're in Shanghai, you should definitely go for a walk to the famous Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Rd). This is the biggest and most famous commercial street in the city. The biggest part of the street is for pedestrians only, so you can be sure that the stress of the Shanghai traffic will be away from you.
However, the part that is closer to Jiangpu River and therefore to the amasing view of Jinmao Building and, of course, Oriental Pearl Tower, is also for cars.
And because Nanjing Lu is mostly shopping area, you should arm with spare time, patience and, of course, money...
St. Ignatius Cathedral
by Amareyui
The Xujiahui area bordering the western end of Frenchtown once had a Jesuit settlement. The St. Ignatius Cathedral is located at such a location. Its Gothic style, and its spiritual teaching most locals sway away from, forms a strange isolation from the hectic scene in the nearby Xujiahui commercial district.
Shanghai
by gigi_huang
Shanghai lies in the mouth of Yangtze river. It is now one of the best
cities in China.
Shanghai was devided into differnt "concessioins" by Japan, France,
Britain, Germany and Italy during 1840-1949, as leaves architectures of
various styles that makes the city charming. Shanghai once got its name
as "whore of the east" and was known as the home of crime and
prostitutes, but now the city has projected its image of vibrant, young and
cool.
As Shanghai was open to the world earlier than other cities in China,
Shanghai people are comparatively more westernized in mentality.
Shanghainese family are more open; they encourage kids to try new
things rather than simply tell kids thousands of don'ts. However, in the
past, Shanghainese was pictured as extremely arrogant(Shanghai
people think that any other place outside Shanghai is countryside) and
money-minded (Shanghai people started commercialization when
people of other places are still faithful to Maoism) and was disliked by
people of other places of the country. Actually a topic about
Shanghainese always leads to hot debates. If you can read Chinese, you
can easily find funny articles about Shanghainese, mostly sarcastic, on
the internet.
Overall, Shanghai is a wonder with blend of modernization and rich
history and culture. It can be explored and tasted by all kinds of people in
their own style. It's a city where you can be ambitious, or just relax and
enjoy the colorful life.
