Some kind of shop
Maybe one of you guys that reads Chinese can tell me what the shop is?? I just thought it was very interesting with the jars outside and very 1920's looking. I should have looked inside so I would know what they offered!

Along with 3 others,(2 Couples) i am planning a trip to china Dec 06-Jan 07. We plan to spend about 14 days. We have 2 days in Hong Kong, 2 Days in Guillin, 3 Days in Beijing and 5 days in Shanghai. My questions are as follows.
1) Should we pre book everything through a travel agent in Australia or should we book when we get to China.IE: Hotels, Flights etc etc
2) Are we better flying from Guillin to Beijing and then From Beijing to Shanghai or should we take a train.
3) What are the best areas to stay in both Beijing and Shanghai which gives us easy access to shopping, nightlife etc etc.
4) What Hotels would you recommend. I don't want top of the range but i do want something clean and tidy maybe 4 star.
If you could help me with these questions it would be much appreciated. Thank you
for hotel in shanghai, i booked on-line via www.asiatravel.com. we stayed at new harbour service apartment where prices are much lower over the dec holidays due to their long-term tenants ie expats going back home. for 2 couples, a 2BR apartment works out much cheaper than 4 star hotel. cheers
In Shanghai i can recommend the old Astor house hotel, now called Pujijanghotel. Very central and full of character. Clean and tidy but not too expensive.
One remark about your schedule: I would never stay in Guilin but head over to the nearby Yangshuo. Guilin is a busy and pretty ugly town while Yangshuo is a pretty relaxed place. Tourist facilities are much better in Yangshuo including a wide range of good hotels. 2 days there is a little short. I would add one or two days extra there and take them off your stay in Shanghai. Shanghai is big and modern, fun for a couple of days but nothing that should keep you there for 5 days.
I have some pics one: http://www.de-wall.nl/china/china.htm
Good luck,

Thank you for that. I actually stuffed up the info i gave. I am not staying at Guillin i am heading to Yangshuo. My girlfriends father is teaching in Yangshuo. Aslo i am going to Shanghai and then on to Beijing and not the other way around as i stated. Anyway thank you.

SUBWAY / SKY TRAIN. There are 2 subway lines and 1 sky train line. #1 from Shanghai train station to Xinzhuang. #2 from Longyang Lu to Jiangsu Lu. #3 from FaubourgJiangwan to Caohejin. Fare range 1-4 Yuan.
This 486 metres high tower has become a symbol of Pudong. Each level means a different entrance fee. From 30RMB (lowest level only) to 100RMB (all levels). My advice is to include 50RMB extra in your ticket so you can enjoy the buffet in the revolver restaurant.
The Bank of China Building, built in 1937 at No.23 The Bund on the site of the old German Club (c. 1907), housed the headquarters of the Bank of China. The stunted appearance of the building is attributed to Sassoon's insistence that no other building on the Bund could rise higher than his. In the original design, this building had 34 floors and would've been the highest in the Far East.
Suzhou is a beautiful city on the Grand Canal less than 3 or so hours away from Shanghai. The city is known for its artists and gardens, the walled gardens here are the best examples of the ancient art of maximising space with a garden that features a moving vantage point. The Garden of the Master of the Nets is particularly neat.
Also at the Garden of the Master of the Nets, you can take a change to practice your Chinese painting skills, people are sometimes on hand with brushes and paper. Hehe now we know why I prefer photography....
