Shanghai school visit

by shanghaivisitor

I'll be in town next week with my 11 year old son. He would love to meet some Chinese kids of his age. Does anyone out there know if that is possible ? Any other ideas for kids of his age (first visit) ? Does anyone know if rollerblades can be hired at the skating park ?

Few schoolchildren will be at school after classes in China, for 11 year old gentleman, maybe the Shanghai amusement park or Shanghai Science and Technology Museum are good choices to meet new friends. Rollerblades hired service is available in all skating park.

Gavin
Thank you for that information. I believe there is a holiday at the beginning of April - Sweeping broom day ? Will there be good fireworks ?

I wondered wether you mean Tomb Sweeping Day. It's a day to the honor past ancestors in China. At that day, Chinese visit their family graves, pulled the weeds , and swept away dity, as well as set out offerings of food and spirit money. It is a little sentimental, so no firework or other celebration will be happen. But people also often fly kites on Tomb Sweeping Day. Kite can be made in different colors and shapes such as dragonflies, crabs, butterflies, bats, it will be fuuny for your lovely son I guess.

Good value!

by rabbit06 about Bi Feng Tang

There is quite a number of this restaurant chain in and around Shanghai producing good value local foods. They all have a different but good ambience, helpful staff, but be early at this one otherwise you will find a que as it is popular. The menu is very good, great selection of well priced foods and is what the local people enjoy to eat when they are out. A great time for me to try the many local dishes!

The Bund

by chatterley

The Bund was once part of the foreign concession area (eg. British Concession, French Concession etc), and was out-of-bounds to locals. During the Qing Dynasty, the allied troops of eight countries attacked China, and the Chinese government eventually signed treaties to allow the foreigners to take over the concession areas, as well as handed over control of Hong Kong and Macau (to the British and Portugese respectively).

The Bund is Shanghai's financial hub, also known as the "Wall Street of the Far East". The buildings in this area are distinctly more "Western" in architectural styles, as they are mostly from the Concession era.

MY SHANGHAI TRIP

by lemon4juice

"-I LOVE IT-"

As they said Shanghai is indeed the largest city in China. It is continually attracting tourists from all over the world. Shanghai is a reflection of China's fast growing economy. People and places are both interesting. There's the rich culture of Chinese heritage and there's nice locals around you. Both people and places are interesting.I appreciate this country so much, that It reminds me of one of my roots.

According to one of the most leading news magazine on-line, it is the year of China this year 2006. Specially Shanghai. Shanghai China is becoming the next New York. Infrastructure is getting better and better and becoming more and more sophisticated...

The only dis-advantage that I have encountered so far is the language. Not too many Chinese people can understand and speak English. I asked my friend for help to make a translation of the basic words you needed for communication.

Other than that, I am proud to have visited China and have friends there. I will definitely be going back and i'll see you guys!

These magnificent European like buildings can be found at the "Bund" in Zhongshan Road near Nanjing Road. This place can be too crowded especially during holiday seasons.

Across the Bund is the Oriental Pearl Tower, also considered as one of the major tourists spots. The view is magnificent and so romantic specially at night. You would wish that night never ends and gazing the stars with your love.
