Hi there everyone will be in Shanghai in mid January, yes I've found out it will be a little cold then, was thinking of staying at the Holiday Inn Downtown
585 Heng Feng Road
City 200070 SHANGHAI

But I have been told it's to close to the train station and not real safe at night due to gangs around the stations, they say the day ok , but are all lines on the shanghai metro unsafe in the evening, look forward to some feed back, thanks.

The train station is the train station. Metro is the metro. Please don't confuse these two -- they're not one and the same. Agree with what you've heard about the safety around train station though. Too much riff-raff everywhere around.
I'd really recommend staying somewhere else for the same price but in a much more central location. Are you there for work or holiday? If you could VTMail me with your budget range and criteria/more information I'll be happy to help you look up better choices.

Stay in the Jing An district. It is safer and closer to the Metro. There are also more restaurants available with English menus. I just stayed in the Pacific Grand LBO and found it to be a good choice. The only bad thing is breakfast is generally not included. I like egg Mc Muffins, so I found a place to eat nearby. A second choice is the City Hotel, third Equitorial or Hilton on Hua Shan Road, fourth the JC Mandarin or Portman if you are rich.

I think the Hoilday Inn is not is a good place for tourists at this time. The area is changing, so it may be better in the future.

Agree with the other posters, HI Downtown is an old hotel and area around the train station is not that great. You may want to try other places.

Hi,

I've just returned from Shanghai, and we stayed one night at the Hotel Equatorial (located on Yan'an West Road). It is within walking distance to the Jing'an Si Metro station.

It is a 4-star hotel, the rooms and amenities are pretty good. You might want to refer to my shanghai page (under hotels and accommodation tips section) for more info.

enjoy your shanghai trip!

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Displayed cooking

by solopes

In many restaurants, the invitational sight is... the kitchen.

Usually hidden in western restaurants, the Chinese like to show cookers at work.

The famous dumplings (not so special for my taste) are a good opportunity to show the cooker's skills.

Maglev

by Pimpernel

The Maglev (magnetic levitation) train is a MUST. The train runs between Pudong International Airport and LongYang Road station. There you can transfer to the regular Metro trains for the last leg into downtown Shanghai. The Maglev reaches a top speed of 431KPH during the 7 minute trip. It runs every 15 minutes...to the second. I think most of the passengers are purely joy riders who take the 80RMB return trip just for the experience. The train and stations are immaculate.

Oriental Pearl Tower - Landmark of Shanghai

by chatterley

The fog was really heavy during our stay in Shanghai, and our tour guide proposed that we cancel our visit to the Oriental Pearl Tower and watch an acrobatic show. Of course, the whole group protested, and we eventually stuck to our itinerary and went up to the Pearl Tower. How would a trip to Shanghai be complete without a visit to its landmark building? Granted, we couldn't see a lot (due to the weather), and only the lower "sphere" of the tower was visible from the ground, but we were contented...

After ascending the tower, we spent some time on the highest observatory deck...couldn't see a thing! Then, we went down to the lower levels, and could finally see some lights on the Shanghai streets.

(Do you know that this tower is the highest in Asia, and the third highest in the world?)

"Nanjing Road"

Although lived in Shanghai and has passed Nanjing road for thousand time, I just realized I seldom have a decent shot of my city. It is now time to catch up!

"a small park in the down town"

Shanghai is a city occupied by modern buildings and fasions, without much links to the natual. This is one of a few places which can remind us that we are still living on the earth - the lovely blue planet.
