Tailored Suits and Shoes

by ktmac1

Does anybody know where is the best place to get womens tailor made suits. I will be in Shanghai in July and wanted to get one of my suits copied in 4 or 5 different colours. I will be able to bring it with me? Can you suggest a good quality tailor? How much should I expect to pay for a suit (wool blend).
Also, I am a 9 and a half shoe size, so they make shoes that big in Shanghai.
Thanks.

Hi,

There is a street here near the Bund that has many textile stalls. I heard these stores do tailor made too. My aunty from Hong Kong came last week and they have made a jacket for her at RMB240. The place is call "Dong Jia Du" Road. Recently they have moved to a nearby building at "Lu Jia Bang" Road (check this e-map: http://sh.edushi.com/?171620). I use to see many foreigners go to this place to purchase textiles and tailor made their needs. Well, as for shoes? sorry I am not too sure yet!

It's 399 Lujiabang Lu. It's just south of the old location right near the river. If you look at the map, it's just north of the big circle interchange on the east end of Lujiabang Lu.

We were just there yesterday. Three floors of little stalls of vendors and tailors. We walked the 3 floors first, noting the stalls we are interested in. Then, we go back through again hitting those stalls.

Bargain hard. And for silk materials, ask them to test them. We walked out of one stall because the vendor refused to do the burn test for us. She immediately fessed up and said it's part silk and part polyester and halfed the price. Because it is a nice pattern and wife can use it for some Halloween costume, we bargained it down another 50%. Ended up being like some ridiculous amount of $1.50US/meter for some oriental style heavy brocade.

The place is sparkling and clean. First batch of vendors moved in on April 1. Some of them are still moving in.

My wife said she has died and went to heaven. We spent 4 hours in there and left with like US$300 worth in fabrics, half of them silk. Would have been over US$1000 if purchased in U.S., that is, if you can find them.

Can you please explain the "burn test" for silk?

Would also be interested in how much one should expect to pay for a nicely tailored suit in Shanghai....

Thanks in advance for advancing my ignorance!

Burn test - ask them to burn a thread or small swatch off the fabric. Real silk will smell like burnt human hair, not pleasant. Silk blends will smell sweeter. The burnt area of real silk will also crumble to the touch, not melted like poly or blends will do. Do the burn test using a lighter at home using materials you know so you get a hang of it.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Postcards with your own face

There is a China Post outlet near Yu Yuan Gardens that has a machine that will produce a postcard with your face on it. You can pick the background of the postcard with many of Shanghai's famous landmarks or scenes. I think the postcard was RMB10 each.

Shanghai crosswalk guard.

by Guantanamera

Here is another shot of the same Shanghai crosswalk guard from the tip above... In this scene, the guard is having some trouble with a young wayward couple that refuses to abide the rules... The cute girl has rushed ahead with her boyfriend in tow, and now the crosswalk guard is interceding, blowing his loud whistle... Finally, the couple stops, obeying his authority... Maybe they were protected from harm, maybe it was just an unthinking imposition of rules, maybe some combination of the two... Out of all countries I have visited, China is the most over-policed, yet at the same time, one of the safest... Security has become a way of life, at the same time, creating an illusion of safety in a groundless and mercurial universe...

Shanghai's Western Waterfront - The Bund

by MaosRedArmy

The Bund, also called the Zhongshan Road, is the waterfront area of Pu Xi (West City) that faces the newer part of Shanghai - Pu Dong (East City).

The Bund has been regarded as the symbol of Shanghai for hundreds of years, is less than one mile in length, and is a popular desitnation for tourists.

Walking along the Bund at night is a fascinating site, as the entire PuDong skyline (across the river) is illuminated, including the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the 2nd tallest building in the world - Jin Mao Tower.

And directly across Zhongshan Road, you will see many different types of structures from Old Shanghai, including: Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and Renaissance.

NOTE: BRING YOUR CAMERA......

Dragon Wall. The emperor had planned to have the owner killed for having this dragon symbol on his property. The clever owner quickly pointed out that dragons have five claws instead of four as this dragon does. So he was spared death for his quickness.

I can't resist the carmel frappuccino!
