Fun things to do for visiting business people- making contact with local English speakers

by lambrook

Me and 3 colleagues are arriving in Shanghai on Saturday, and will be on a stand at a trade fair until Thursday.

What are fun things do do (not just bars, though we like those) and cool things to do and see.

Also I will be looking to hire Chinese speakers who can help establish our business here. not full time jobs yet, but definitely with prospects.

Please e-mail me on lambrook@googlemail.com if you are interested in the second topic.

The same questions apply to Shanghai where we fly on Thursday

Thanks

Richard

Hi - I have just come back from a great trip to Shanghai. I used a company called Luxury Concierge China, who basically organised my whole trip. They booked all my resturants, bars, clubs, tickets...we got VIP treatment to all the best places in town and sorted out a local tour guide. I highly recommend you contact them...www.luxuryconciergechina.com - they are great and organised things for me that were highly unusual and interesting - bike tours, a walk on bridge, taoist priest fortune teller.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Aerial View of Pu Xi

by Sharrie

Aerial view of PU XI from Grand Hyatt Hotel.

This is one of the 2 locations in Shanghai where you can get great views of the city of "Old Shanghai - Puxi". We stayed at this hotel & therefore have access to it day & night either from the room, the cafe or the lounge. It's amazing to just stand here & looked & marvel at the progress Shanghai has made in the last decade! I'd never have imagined it!

Taxis in Shanghai

by thescene

Since a lot of the cabbies in Shanghai do not speak English it would be advisable to have hotel staff write your destination in Chinese. Also when you are travelling you must make sure that the driver starts the meter as you start your journey. Otherwise you will be paying more than you should. Be sure to demand a receipt from driver as you are leaving so that you know who to call if you have any complaints.

Every city seems to have it's...

by zizquark

Every city seems to have it's local famous food that draws long lines every day. In Shanghai it's the Nanxiang Dumpling Store. In the Yu Yuan area a few steps from the YuYuan tea house, they are made with crabmeat and pork. There are long lines everyday with about a 45 min. wait for dumplings. Local people say they are the best in Shanghai because of the combination of meat and paper thin dumpling.People were having their friends photograph them with their long sought after dumplings.

Pudong skyline

by cheezecake_deli

The Pudong skyline, viewed from The Bund, represents shiny "new" Shanghai. New Shanghai clearly means skyscrapers to the town planners here. I'm told a building in Shanghai cannot be classified as "high-rise" unless it exceeds 20 floors! The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is an obvious landmark, but look out also for the rather graceful Jinmao Tower, China's tallest building.

Business in China

"Shanghai"

Seldom I have seen such differences between architecture of the old city and the new parts of Shanghai. The industrial zone with all kind of new setups, the modern underground system with German technology and the taxi drivers with all those Volkswagen Santanas manufactured in China.

The honking of the taxi drivers never stops. Bicyclists and rickshaw drivers ride at their own risk. Traffic is quite dangerous in the small streets of the old city, although I was surprised that not too many accidents are happening.
