Concert in He Luting Concert hall
by flyer31
The He Luting concert hall is an older style concert hall with a relatively ordinary rectangular shape and an impressioning wooden wall - otherwise quite "spartanic", but nice and good chairs. It is located in the middle of the campus of the Music university of Shanghai, where also Lang Lang comes from. The campus is between the stations South Shanxi and Changshu Road (in the north there is the luxurious Donghu hotel - so it is also between Donghu hotel and Yu garden).
I saw there a presentation of the BG Choir (www.bgchoir.org), giving Chinese folk songs in modern interpretation, this was extremely nice. I was lucky to pass by one day earlier and meet some students who showed me the (extremely hidden) box office (in another building, a woman speaking only Chinese) and got the second last ticket for me.
The presentations in this concert hall seem to be presented in http://www.culture.sh.cn/english, which is a very helpful site (except booking online does not work and it can get quite an adventure to find the concert hall locations, as they give only the street names, no maps).

Astor House construction
by ladystephy
I was about to book the Astor House hotel (found a great rate at only $64/night) in Shanghai from July 20-23, but then read that there is a lot of construction going on in that area. I guess that the constuction is very loud and disturbing to guests at the hotel and has also cut off a walk way to shops. Does anyone know if this construction is completed or should we look at another hotel?
We are a couple in our early 30's looking for a hotel in a convenient location under $120 US a night. We were also looking at
Broadway mansions
Bund riverside
Donghu - this one also has service apartments. what is this?
Ramada Plaza -actually, this one is out of our budget right now, but if people really recommend it we could splurge. Other hotels in this category are Sofitel Hyland and Hilton
Jin jiang
An ting Villa
Thanks in advance!

We stayed a few nights at the City Hotel. It is near everything. Also, being in the French Concession made it very convenient to shop, eat and stroll around this fun part of Shanghai. It is also very reasonable. (they gave us an upgrade because our original room was too small) There is a sweet cafe in the lobby with many international magazines and newspapers for free. We like the historic JinJiang hotel too...only a few blocks from the City Hotel. Best of all, we discovered it was an easy and interesting walk to NanJing Road from this area(thus avoiding a hectic taxi ride!!).

Donghu Hotel is separate from the serviced apartments with the same name -- the serviced apartments aren't in a good location, but the hotel is.
I'm not sure if you'd be also interested in Mansion Hotel? That's just around the corner from Donghu Hotel, more upmarket, but fab if you like the decor and atmosphere.
