Silky Dreams
by nomadig about Silk King
China is one of the best places to buy silk and Shanghai is no exception. The silk can be bought as a fabric or readymade garment, if you don't know how to make clothes by yourself.
Silk King is a multistorey silk and wool shop on the busy shopping street Nanjing Road. There are several different qualities of silk and cashmere wool available, in all the colours of the rainbow + black and white. The store has also several branches around the city.
Unfortunately, all the material is not what it looks like and some fabrics are advertised as silk, but are something artificially fabricated. If you don't know the difference -- in other words, you are buying for your wife or girlfriend -- be careful. The staff doesn't speak good English, or English at all, so you may end up buying something that you really didn't want to purchase.
If you have more time to spend, I'd suggest to go to Dongjiadu cloth market for better bargains.
Starbucks in Shanghai
by meteorologist1 about Starbucks Coffee
In Shanghai, you're not far from great freshly brewed coffee. There are lots of coffee places, some foreign and some domestic. You can find the familiar Starbucks at the Chenghuang Temple, located among the traditional Chinese architecture as seen in the picture.
The Financial Tower aka "Jin Mao Da Sha"
by xuessium
The building's shape draws on traditional Chinese forms, especially the tiered pagoda.
- The tower is designed to withstand an earthquake of 6 on the Richter scale and the strongest level of typhoon.
- The hotel atrium starts at the 53rd floor and extend upwards to the 87th floor. It has a clear height of 152 meters and a diameter of 27 meters, making it one of the tallest atriums in the world.
- Currently the tallest building in the People's Republic of China and the fifth tallest in the world.
It is unlikely you can enter for a look as security is tight but it is still worthwhile working around the perimeter.
Shanghai
by Steveharley
Had the opportunity to visit Shanghai on two occasions and even manged a couple of days off to play. Stayed at the Sheraton Tai Ping Yang this time
As my last visit was in June I just caught the beginning of the rainy season and Shanghai was pretty drippy. Did some of the obvious touristy things. Bund, Tunnel under the river (peoples tunnel?), Oriental Pearl, bought a kite and and got my camera stolen just coming out of the subway onto Peoples park .....now matter how long you travel you can always do with the occasional lesson! It took some persistance but I managed to get a theft report from the Shanghai Police based in the park - entirely in Manadarin - made my insurance company laugh.
Also met the MOST persistent street trader I have ever met, he managed to clean my shoes as I was walking along despite the NO, NO NO...
Loved the food, loved the little street markets and the chaos of the old town. Can't wait to visit again - next time in the sunshine
"Mag Lev"
This is an experience not to miss. Get a cab to the central Mag Lev station and take this fantastic ride to the airport. It reaches 400+ km per hour and swishes you to the airport in a few minutes. The cost is arround $10USfor a first cass seat - great fun, almost went back into town just to do it again.....
