In Beijing, I stayed at the Lido. Very self-contained property. In Shanghai I stayed at a hotel that used to be the house of Chiang Kai-Shek; In Guangzhou, I stayed at the White Swan, and in Dalian I stayed at a very nondescript Soviet-era style hotel. The Shanghai hotel was big, with very large rooms from the 1930's and 40's. Lots of large, dark wooden furniture. The others were either modern or nothing to write home about.
Shanghai - Hotel
by iam3xxx about Xin Xie Tong International Hotel
A newly built 2003 , 4 star hotel that is out of the crowded area and within 5 mins walking distance to Nanjing Road sub Station With 5 star facilities in the room. Reasonably large bath room with shower room too. Large and solid bed for a good night's rest, over 40 and more channels on the TV.
A good stay in North Beijing
by Malayanil about National Jade Hotel, Chaoyang District, Beijing
It was a very nice and clean hotel - 3 star plus category. Very close to porposed Olympic sites (Beijing Olympic - 2008). Being in North and slightly away from downtown it is a quite area, not much of traffic.
Rooms are nice.
Aircooling is bad (i found it in my Shanghai hotel too)
Getting drinking water is difficult. Minibar was empty. No mineral/bottled water in room. As staff does not speak English for first night we got boiling hot water to drink. (Chinese people are very concerned about their health that is why they prefer to drink hot water - surely not boiling hot) Hotel is at a very quite and away from crowd location.
Very close (walking distance) from Beijing supermarket, pizza hut, McDonalds.
Must meet Ms. Anita Wu - Manager. She is very nice and helpful. Speaks good English too.

Anyone heard of West Asia Hotel. This 3star hotel was recommended by my agent but I can't seem to find any information on the hotel anywhere? Are there any sights within walking distance from the hotel?

Quote from the 2001 LP edition:
"Has a good location on the bustling Xujiahui crossroads with 2 star singles/doubles".
Given it was written 3 years ago it may be spruced up.
It appears to be about 7kms from the Bund., little bit out of "town".
The Bund is delightful at night, the locals are so wonderful. I recall getting my photo taken several times with children, funny.

The location of the hotel is very good. surrounded by eateries and shopping malls and transportation facilities.
I think you can negotiate the room price too. I stayed there about 7months ago.The rooms are rather small and cramped.Suggest you to have a look at the room at first before you register.
Since i needed a bigger room i stayed only for a night there and then moved out to an another hotel.
