Nice Hotel at Shopping Area

This is a very good hotel managed by Singapore Mandarin Hotel Group. Hotel is very clean and comfortable. I enjoyed staying at JC Mandarin.

You can get South East Asia food in the hotel, such as Chicken Rice, Bak Kut Teh, Laksa, etc.

Unique Quality: The Hotel is at Nanjing Xi Lu, where the shopping district is. Hard Rock Cafe is just opposite the hotel.

The J.C. Mandarin Hotel in the...

by jmf_traveler

The J.C. Mandarin Hotel in the very modern and cosmopolitan section of Shanghai was elegant (the view from my window included the Hard Rock Cafe across the boulevard). This was my last day/night in China before flying home so splurging at a luxury hotel seemed a great way to end it! Beautiful mahogony furnishings; full stocked mini-bar.

Food court at Isetan

by Sharrie

This is actually a food court we found at the basement of Isetan Departmental Store near Shanghai JC Mandarin Hotel. Incidentally, I'm planning to stay in this hotel the next time I'm in town. It's more centrally located & my colleague highly recommended it. There are many varieties of Chinese food including Tim Sum for a meagre sum of money. The best thing about Shanghai are its yummy & yet economical restaurants & the numerous taxi at a low cost.

Good Shanghainese Food

by scfang about Xiao Nan Guo

Xiao Nan Guo serves good Shanghainese food with reasonable price. There are a few branches in Shanghai, I have tried Hong Mei Lu branch, Nanjing Xi Lu (close to Hard Rock) and Pudong (close to Pearl TV Tower). The one at Nanjing Xi Lu offers a good view of the exibition center next to JC Mandarin. The Exibition center is with Russian archetecture. Pork Trotter - One of the better pork trotter I tried.
Wenzhou Crab - Raw crab soak in Chinese wine
Deep Fried Snake - one of their signiture dishes.

1st Visit to Shanghai

by mayleecm

Hi, I will be travelling to Shanghai sometime in August for only 2 nights. This is my 1st time there. Would like to know as a single lady, which hotel location is safe and good in term for shopping and great food. Please advice, thanks.

What exactly is your price range? I would recommend staying somewhere in the French Concession: around Jing'an Temple, around Xujiahui or along Huaihai Zhonglu.

Shanghai has every imaginable upper star hotel and is generally a safe city. If you are looking for cheap hotels though, there aren't many decent ones. A good choice is the motel chain called, 'Motel 168'. You can find it all over the city and it's quite pleasant. :)

Jocelyn has good suggestion for the French Q. Or if money is no problem stick to hotels along Nanjing Road. I like the Sofitel or the Howard Johnson behind (RBM 15-1800 a night). Both on the door step of one of the world's best shopping street and walking distance to the Bund, People's Square, Yu Garden and easy access to the rest of the city via subway which is close by.

Hi,

Thanks for all your reply. Now my trip has been postpone to 27th August. Any comments on Shanghai JC Mandarin? It is a good hotel and near the shopping area? Please advise. Thanks. :-)

No complaints, although it's not my 1st choice either. I would pick another hotel if you want to be shopping near the hotel -- unless you're after expensive branded goods.

Re: 1st Visit to Shanghai

So what about Radisson Hotel Shanghai New World? Or The Bund? Or you have another other to recommend. As the other 2 you mention earlier Sofitel and Howard Johnson, my friend find it too crowded and noisy. It that true? Thanks

Re: 1st Visit to Shanghai

Sofitel (I presume you mean Sofitel Hyland) and Howard Johnson (I presume you mean Howard Johnson Plaza) are noisy?! I wouldn't think so.
Radisson New World is fab if you have that much money to splurge... I don't. Seriously though, what price range are you aiming for?
Location of Bund Hotel isn't as good.

Re: 1st Visit to Shanghai

I amk a regular at both Sofitel Hyland and Howard Johnson and found them not noisy at all, perhaps at street level as they are on Nanjing Road and busy street corner but very nice from lobby and up. Sofitel has small rooms vs HJ but I like the Sofitel decor better.

Re: 1st Visit to Shanghai

by mayleecm

Thanks for all the sharing.... If Radisson is good then maybe I'll choose that as the rate are cheaper compared to sofitel. By the way, how's the weather in Shanghai now? :-)

Re: 1st Visit to Shanghai

by ellyse

Anywhere on street level in central Shanghai could be considered "noisy". It's not realistic to expect otherwise, come on! If you want a centrally-located hotel, be prepared for the area around it (at street level) to be bustling and crowded.
Hot and humid right now.
