Experience the real Shanghai atmosphere
by maria_hz
Many visitors to Shanghai only see the main attractions; Pu Dong, Nanjing road and so on. But to just walk along the smaller streets that still criss-cross central Shanghai is the best way to soak up the real Shanghainese atmosphere. In Shanghai, as in other parts of China, lives are lived in close proximity to the street.
Families run businesses and raise their children in their shops, old and young meet to eat or to play, food is sold, bargains are made, clothes are washed. Many smaller streets still host a variety of businesses; shops, food stalls, seven-elevens, repair shops...
There are specialty streets, for example "beauty street", an area where a lot of spa and beauty salon products are sold, "stationary streets" where you can get anything from a business card holder to book-keeping necessities, and so on.
Many of these streets retain their very Shanghainese character with traditional architecture and living conditions. Some years from now, who knows what will be left of these streets? So enjoy them while you can and get a taste of Shanghai.
Shanghai cabs
by bitbit
Traveling by cabs in Shanghai is very affordable and most convenient. The initial starting fare is at 10RMB for 3km. The cabs are metered and the cab drivers are mostly very honest (unlike in Thailand, Indonesia or Vietnam where meters are sometimes doctored to reflect higher fares or drivers try to bring the passengers on some wild goose chase). Just a gauge of the fare prices - from Nanjing to The Bund is just slightly more than 10RMB, from HongKou area to Nanjing is approx. 30RMB, from HongKou/Nanjing district to Pudong airport is approx. 150-200RMB. Most drivers don't speak English so you might want to inform the conceirge of your destination so that he can then inform the cab driver. Otherwise, bring along your hotel card or get the conceirge to write down the hotel name/location in chinese so that you can show to the cab driver.
