China Mobile

by marmalade77

Hi there

My partner and I purchased sim cards from a China Mobile store whilst in Beijing a few days ago. However we are soon to go on to Shanghai. The assistants tried to explain the best they could but as we dont speak Chinese and they didnt speak much English it was pretty difficult to understand. They did say they would work in Shanghai but I am unsure how the cost of calls will change. For example will interntional calls be more expensive using a Beijing Sim in Shanghai and what about calls/texts to each other. They gave us a prefix number to dial in Beijing before any other number (12593). Would we still use this whilst in Shanghai? Would it be more cost effective to buy a Shanghai sim, alhtough we are not using it much, only in the case we lose each other or for brief calls to home (UK). Many thanks to anyone who can help.

This forum is for travel questions not detailed guidance to mobile phone charges by specific companies in specific countries! However, since your sim cards' "home city" is Beijing, from Shanghai you will pay a roaming fee in addition to the cost of the call, whether local (e.g. if you lose each other in Shanghai) or international:

your phone will work in Shanghai but roaming charges are very hight (I never could figure out how much but it does run your pre-paid phone out very fast, I burn through 100RMB a day when I travel to Beijing with my Shanghai phone). Also it is very hard or almost impossible to re-charge your pre-paid card once you get to Shanghai so do top up before you head down. The 12593 prefix works in Shanghai (for a Shanghai SIM card anyway). Try to get people to call in instead of calling out as incoming calls are free except for the roaming fee.

These days staying in touch is big part of travel essential so I do not see anything wrong with your post.

Enjoy you trip.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Go out, eat. It is a very safe...

by tartanski

Go out, eat. It is a very safe place and you should be comfortable enought o enjoy yourself. I have any fond memeories of Going out with friendly girls and having a great time. IF your view is like the picture here you are probably on the way to some fancy 5 Star hotel bar or Park 97. Enjoy Shanghai but be human no need to be nasty.

Clubbing on Mao Ming Road

by litekimchi about Manhattan Bar

After spending a couple of hours enjoying the view from a classy place on top of one of the buildings along the Bund, it was quite disorienting to be in a nightclub along Mao Ming. It was more disappointing when the club looked more like a girly bar filled with old, drunken businessmen (who always managed to make anything sleazy anyway). We decided to stay anyway because my friends knew one of the girls in the bar (why am I not surprised with that?) and she did take good care of us. She didn't seem like a woman of the night, just a friend guest relations officer who knew how to entertain guests (and I meant that in a wholesome manner).

This place is anything but happening. But since my friends can more than make do with a pitiful situation (plus, we were inebriated by then, so anything would do), we all managed to have a great time and danced the night away. We came in at about 12MN and left at around a little past 2AM.

The music was OK. But the bartender didn't know how to mix his drinks. The rum&cola tasted more like cola and the vodka&lime tasted more like lime. I had to have several rounds just to get a buzz (or maybe because I have a high tolerance for alcohol?). Get the picture? For females, please don't wear anything skanky. You wouldn't want to be mistaken for a lady of the night.

The recumbent Buddha at the Jade Buddha Temple

by Nemoa

The Recumbent Buddha is 96 centimeters long, lying on his right side with the right hand supporting the head and the left hand reposing on his left leg. This position is known as "lucky repose.

Pretty impresive statue and very real too!

It is quite nice as well to see all the fruits and offers the people take to the Buddha as occasion of the Festivals and Chinese New Year celebrations.
