day trip to Hangzhou

by m0y

Hi

I will be in Shanghai beginning of March. A friend suggested I go see Hangzhou. Would anyone be able to suggest the best way to travel there, bus or plane? Is it cheaper to purchase tickets there, or could I use www.elong.com to book online.

Thanks in advanced

The easy way to go Hangzhou is by train about RMB40 hard seat. Go to Shanghai railway station to buy ticket. Is better you buy you ticket at least 1 day in advance. There also bus Hangzhou but I think take train is better. You may also check with the hotel for ticket booking.

Hard seat train for Shanghai -- Hangzhou is most definitely not as expensive as 40 RMB! It's 33 RMB at the very most. 40 RMB would get you a soft seat already.
The best way to travel there would be train from Shanghai South train station to Hangzhou main train station, and back the same way. Take note of the train stations as both cities have more than one. This would be the fastest, most economical and comfortable way. No need to book online.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Cheers!

Not only eating but drinking is a big part of local lifestyle and even BINGE drinking...wow!
Here they enjoy local white and red wines which are too strong for me, but there are some very pleasant local beers including Tsingtao, Snow and my favourite Steinlager which is also brewed in New Zealand!!

If you are a non Chinese speaker (like me) then don't assume that you will be able to 'get by' using English - as you can in Europe. Always take a card from yout hotel with the address in characters. Some cabbies will recognise the sound of the main hotels- but most will have no idea what you are jibbering about - I found out the hard way and ended up walking 4 miles back to my hotel late at night. - in the rain.

Have to try the shark fin soup...yummy!

by rabbit06 about Yi Gu Restaurant

Yi Gu or Vale is another famous retaurant in Shanghai with it's great Cantonese flavour's, modern decor, impecable service with which i would have to say "fine dinning"....!!
We enjoyed dinner here ( Rabbit under dressed as usual...lol ) with Mr Wang Yong who is Shirley's childhood freind growing up together in this stunning neigbourhood for twenty plus years (hope that's all?...lmao) He is a not only a famous TV personality, but also a book author and anyone in Shanghai for Expo will expect to see him out and about...or at least on tv! We started with the best shark fin soup i have ever had..omg! then the plates just kept coming out and unlike Rabbit struggled with so much great tasting foods, but the pork was just so nice along with the duck and those spring rolls, yip could have eaten them all night!
Arrive with a big appetite, you will need it!!!

This is also known as Temple of the Town Gods or Old God's Temple. It is a compact, colourful temple, where you can see Taoist prayer ceremonies, complete with traditional costumes, instruments and burning incense.

The priests don't mind you filming them, and there are some great photo opportunities here.

"The Bird Market"

Just around the corner and down the street and through the park and then down an alley you find the Bird Market. It's yet another world. Birds are the most favored pet in China. In Hong Kong and Beijing, the parks are filled in the early morning with the songs of the birds as their retired owners take them for the air and to talk with other bird-lovers. In Beijing, there is a large gathering of bird owners at 5:00 a.m. each Sunday in Tiantan. Birds are valued for their ability to sing rather than for the color and beauty of their plumage. The sound of hundreds of birds chirping their greeting to dawn before the city wakes takes you straight into the country and mountainsides.

The market also offered tropical fish, bonsai trees, ceramic pots, and the little Pekinese puppies that. The bird cages and accessories in the market are as varied and beautiful as the birds. You can have a cage made to order or choose one from the hundreds on display.
