Travel Tips for Shanghai

by Russell_L

Walk the Bund at night. In the mist is best, it takes you back in time. Eating in the many restaurants that are tucked away in little side streets. Also the rush of biking locals to work. Yue-Lin Hu, is the flower of China!

street vendors

by rabbit06

You will find street vendors every where including the metro, but a lot will make their living in the late afternoon and evening which is a lot cooler in the summer months and they do not hassle you...great! You can buy all sorts, have a hunt around you will find some great buys to take home and don't forget to bargain as a lot of these goods will be pirated or knock offs!

Dark and Fiery

by nomadig about T8 Restaurant

Mystically named T8 is acclaimed to be one of the best restaurants in Shanghai, and Conde Nast has selected it to be on the top 50 restaurants of the world. Not bad reputation.

The place is ultra-designed, a lot of darkness with a few strategically placed lightspots here and there. The kitchen is open to the tables -- you can also ask a seat on a bar table next to kitchen to see in detail how your meal is prepared.

The food is excellent and costy in Shanghai standards. We ate two course lunch with 10e per person plus beverages. It was clearly the best lunch I've ever had, due to the food, the atmosphere and the company. The place was surprisingly empty, so table reservation seems not to be necessary for the lunch during low season. Try Peking duck pizza, if it's available.

Silk Making - Dung Wu Silk Factory

by easterntrekker

WE saw this demonstration in Thiland but we were able to see it in more detail here. In a twenty words or less......
The silk worm spins a cocoon and this is what is used to make the luxurious fabric we all love.

The worm is killed by heating the cocoon in a sort of wolk. Next the cacoon is added to hot water to loosen the fibre and catch the beginning of the thread.
We saw an assembly line of workers threading the spinning machines...very tedious and tiring work.

China Institute Tour

"New & Old"

City is a mix of old and new. There was a lot of construction, workmen were sleeping in tents on the road, there were 1/4 of the worlds cranes in Shanghai when we were there. I found Shanghai to be one of the most expensive stops in China. I was impressed with the Shanghai Museum, Yunjuan Garden, Children's Palace, Bund & Acrobatic Shop.
