Garden
This is, believe me, in the heart of the city! Looks like a rain forest but is a beautiful garden with a restaurant in the center of pond and a bamboo 'forest' all around it. Beautiful place to spend evening.

Thanks to those who replied to my questions regarding my son's travel to Shanghai this summer. All your advice was well received. We sent him off this morning by himself( he wanted to go alone with the group). I will post an update when he returns in early August.
He will have a fantastic time! I think its rainy in Shanghai these days which makes up for all the humid hot weather Shanghai and Beijing have been having recently.
I look forward to the updates!

If you learn the bus system it is very cheap use! And it can get you anywhere! I guess there is a subway now! Remember all of the info I am giving is based on 1987 and lot's of things have changed??? I'm sure the buses are still as packed as ever though!! If you don't like being packed in tight with alot of people don't even consider riding a Shanghai bus!!
A walk at Lu Jia Jui is a must, and a walk at The Bund where you can see across the river Huang Pu is the modern commercial district. A significant landmark by the name of Pearl Tower of the East can be seen.
Watermellon is served with just about every meal in china and represents the end of a meal. When the watermelon is placed on the table you know that the meal is now over so if you are still hungry....order more food!
Fruit stalls are a very common sight in Shanghai and these stalls also sell the most magnificent peached and Lychees when they are in season.
Watermelons are only sold whole but you can often do a deal with another shopper and purchase half each! This is very common and Anne and I did exactly that in Shanghai. We split the cost with another customer and had the shopkeeper slice the melon for us.
Be warned, haggling is a way of life for these people. 6 peaches should cost you approx. 10 Yuan. A whole watermelon should coast approx. 15 Yuan.
