Shanghai is a big modern city.

Typical things to do are.

1. Take a walk along the Bund, a walkway along the river.
2. Walk along Nanjing Road.
3. Go to Old Town and see the Yuyuan Chinese garden.
4. Go to the Shanghai Museum.
5. Acrobatic show

You can look into taking a day trip to Suzhou or a water town.
You may be interested in taking a two day trip to Hangzhou.

See the following web site for things recommended by other VTers.

Plus up the Pearl TV Tower and visit the Jade Buddha. A day trip to the water village and Suzhou or a hike in the bomboo forest

Erm. Which kind of sights do you lean more towards? No point raving about museums and art if that's not down your alley.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

You can't live without books!

by Shanghai_fabulous about Scholar Book Shop

'Scholar' is the largest book shop within the area of east-south Shanghai. However the size itself is not as important as the concept scholar is pursuing in selling books. Bascially, the interior design is pretty friendly, much like a thempark than a lifeless library. Plus, the books are so well arranged that makes it very easy to find the best books in the field you specified. It's a bookshop you will not want to step out, truly a nice place for leisure & knowledge. Books of all classifications, spend least time buying best books!

Afternoon Tea

by herzog63 about Wuxinting Teahouse

This was quite an interesting place for an expensive cup of tea! Beautiful grounds, Pretty touristy! At the time I visited there were so many people that it was hard to walk around.I mostly was just checking it out. I didn't even have a cup of tea here! The building is beautiful though. There are many other tea houses located in the same area in the Yu Gardens.

JinMao Towers

by thescene

One of the imposing parts of the Pudong Skyline are the Jinmao Towers. It is currently the highest completed building in Shanghai. It will however soon will be eclipsed once the Shanghai Financial Centre is completed later this year.

The Jinmao Towers houses the Hyatt Hotel, and a theatre. It is one of the places where you can have a nice view of skyline via cafe that is over 80 floors up.

Shanghai is the largest city in China in terms of population and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with over 20 million people. Located on China's central eastern coast at the mouth of the Yangtze River, the city is administered as a municipality of the People's Republic of China with province-level status.

Originally a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai grew to importance in the 19th century due to its favourable port location and as one of the cities opened to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanking. The city flourished as a center of commerce between east and west, and became a multinational hub of finance and business by the 1930s. However, Shanghai's prosperity was interrupted after the 1949 Communist takeover and the subsequent cessation of foreign investment. Economic reforms in 1990 resulted in intense development and financing in Shanghai, and in 2005 Shanghai became the world's largest cargo port.

The city is an emerging tourist destination renowned for its historical landmarks such as the Bund and Xintiandi, its modern and ever-expanding Pudong skyline including the Oriental Pearl Tower, and its new reputation as a cosmopolitan center of culture and design.

Today, Shanghai is the largest center of commerce and finance in mainland China, and has been described as the "showpiece" of the world's fastest-growing economy.
