I am planning a trip to Shanghai in the spring. I want to go there and shop for western style furniture for my new home and ship everything back to the states in a container. has anyone tried this and what problems did they encounter.?

it's better for you to contact the movers in shanghai such as santa fe for their door to door charges as early as possible.
What a novel idea but, still I wouldn't do it due to high cost of shipping and insurance. Should one piece be damaged beyond repair, how would you replace it? If I wanted to get cheap furniture, I would visit estate sales in the states. My home is decorated by those famous designers, Hodge and Podge.
Oh yeah the Chinese in China, they spit! Beware of where you walk, cos you might step on others' spit... or you might accidentally be in the way of the spit! Well, Im sure I did step on quite a few dried spits.
Anyway, get pass it or get used to it.
Perhaps the most convenient and comfortable way of travelling around Shanghai is by Taxi.Prices are also quite cheap,starting fees start at RMB10.

This larger restaurant branch is fantastic with formal dinning, great service, relaxed, clean, tidy, pleasantly decorated with hardly an empty table. If you get yourslf a private room you will have your own balcony.....ya! The food is very Shanghainese with some great award winning dishes. Crab, Crayfish, Paua, Tuna to sharks fin soup, they are all just fantastic, you will need to bring a BIG appetite!

Tianzifang is a lovely, pleasantly relaxed part of Shanghai which is great for a wander around.
There are many little shops selling lots of silk and arts, some really nice paintings and prints, very much an "artist type" location.
And there are also plenty of little cafe's offering all types of food and refreshment's!..Great!!!
Did a whirlwind tour of China, from Shanghai then west to Kunming and back south and east to Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Spent three and a half wonderful weeks touring, hiking, people-watching, going back to my roots (visited my parents' villages where they grew up)... it was definitely a trip of a lifetime.
