Shanghai is connected to many destinations in China by direct train. The Shanghai Railway Station (303 Moling Lu) is in the northern part of the city. Several trains a day run to Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and other nearby destinations. The best train to catch to Beijing is the overnight express that leaves around 7 PM and arrives in Beijing the next morning. An express train also runs to Hong Kong.
You can buy train tickets at China International Travel Service (CITS; Guangming Building, 2 Jinling Lu, tel. 021/6321-7200), but they charge a service fee. Same-day, next-day, and sometimes third-day tickets can also be purchased at the ticket office in the Longmen Hotel (777 Hengfeng Lu, tel. 021/6317-0000) on the western side of the train station. For 24-hour train information, call 021/6317-9090.
