Captain Hostel or Mingtown Etour
by heymikey
Which hostel in Shanghai do you recommend staying at? I'm looking mainly for location (walking distance to sites and metro), character, cleanliness, and security. Also, price should be reasonable as well.

My office is just near the two hotels, the two hotel are very close, and location is just near the metro station, Line 2, Century Avenue. Mingtown is more expensive. Captain is a new hostel.(open last year)

I stayed at the Captain Hostel a couple of years ago. My friend and I stayed in one of the rooms with two beds and its own bathroom. It was a wonderful place to stay. It has a bar on the top that overlooks the Bund. Sitting up there at night is absolutely beautiful. There are several extremely expensive restaurants and bars with the same view--but you have it from the Captain Hostel! The place was very nice and clean, location is wonderful. I highly recommend this place.

Sorry, My above reply is wrong, I confused the "Mingtown Etour hostel" with Mingtown hotel. and the "Captain hostel" with "Captain Youth hostel". Mingtown hotel and Captain youth hostel happend to be near my office. but it's not what you mentioned. Sorry.

Definitely pick Etour. The staff at Captain's have been known to be awfully rude on occasion.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
Shanghai Ocean Aquarium
by Jiang_Cucha
Shanghai Ocean Aquarium It is known as the biggest Aquarium of asia. I finally visited it on a broiling Sunday afternoon. Actually it is better than another Aquarium of Shanghai. There are so many wonderful fishes, which shining my eyes time after time. However, the ticket is quite expensive, RMB110 for adult...:)
Taxis are cheap and metro is very good.
by MarvintheMartian
Taxis are metered and are an excellent way to get around the city. Avoid people trying to get you in a car which is not a marked taxi, they will charge you silly prices. All taxis are metered and currently start at 11 RMB (14 RMB after 11pm I think), and then go by a mixture of distance and time. You can go a big distance on little money.
The subway is also a cheap and efficient means of travel. Obviously avoid it during rush peak periods, however use it any other time. It is modern and opening new lines all the time up to the opening of the 2010 Expo. Prices start at 2 RMB and go up to 5 RMB (at least I think that's the max!).
Buses are also a good means of transport, however more confusing to work out. You will need someone to explain which bus you need to go where unless you speak Chinese! Cost is silly cheap!
Good value!
by rabbit06 about Bi Feng Tang
There is quite a number of this restaurant chain in and around Shanghai producing good value local foods. They all have a different but good ambience and at this one had plenty of freindly helpful staff who could not do enough... The menu is very good, great selection of well priced foods and is what the local people enjoy to eat when they are out. A great time for me to try the many local dishes! Fantastic lunch!!
Tea House
by travelpug
There is a famous tea house in the middle of the lake. I imagine it must be such a enjoyable place to sip your tea and have a nice chat when it was first built... but nowadays, with the crowds, I don't think it is a place to relax and enjoy tea.
Shanghai, China

"My first impression of China"
Shanghai is a truly marvelous, vibrant and dynamic city. It's actually two cities, the traditional Shanghai, and the ultra-modern Pudong, separated by the Huangpu river.
First night I could not sleep due to jetlag, and got up at 3:00 AM to take a relaxing walk around the block. My hotel (Ramada Plaza) is a little bit outside the city, quite and growing neighborhood.
As I was strolling along the sidewalk, an unreadable construction sign blocked my way. I steped around it, and back on the sidewalk ... and right into the freshly poured concrete !
Nobody was around to see me massage the wet plaster back into my footsteps, and I soon went on my way again.
So if you ever see on the sidewalk in Pudong two shoe marks cast into concrete, size 8 1/2, their mine ... my first impressions left in China.
Feel free to add your impressions as well ...
Laszlo
