shanghai accommodation
by grosmas
Hi I am thinking of booking for my 2 night stay in shanghai at either
the Asset hotel - No 590 South Wanping Road, Xuhui (which i believe is near the french concession),
white mansion hotel 1755 North Sichuan Road, Hongkou
Salvo hotel 339 GuangDong Rd, Nanjing Lu
Nanjing Hotel 200 Shanxi Road South, Nanjing Lu
i am leaning towards either the asset hotel or te nanjing hotel.
in terms of buses or trains which is better? and in terms of night life shopping does it matter?
does anyone have an idea of the best area to stay?

There are many different neighborhoods in Shanghai and each has a distinct atmosphere, so which area is best for you depends on what you are looking for. There seem to be a lot of expats around the French Concession area, and lots of tourists in Old Town, People's Square, etc. Each area is worth a visit. I never stayed in either of the hotels you mention though. Anywhere by Nanjing Rd will have plenty of shopping, but so will many other areas.
As for transportation, average metro ride within the city is gonna be about 4 RMB, and stops are announced in Chinese and English. Most hotels will have a free metro guide available. Buses, I believe are 2 RMB, but only announce stops in Chinese. I haven't seen a bus route map in English yet.
Both will be brutally packed anywhere near the rush hours, but are a great way to get around in between and after. Taxis aren't bad either, starting at 12 RMB up to 3 km and are just over 2 RMB/km after that (day time).

I have another good hotel for you to consider, the Starway Jiaxin at Hongkou Football Stadium. I've just had a friend stay there yesterday and he was very pleased with the place. A room should be around 240 RMB/night and the hotel is a stone's throw away from Hongkou Football Stadium metro stop on line 8, only 17 mins by metro to People's Square.
I know you like night markets and such, there're always lots of street vendors around the stadium on any night. Transport-wise as I've said earlier is convenient, and there's also a direct airport shuttle to Pudong airport for about 20+ RMB/pax.

FAMOUS XIAOLONGBAO INSIDE YU GARDEN
by ancient_traveler
xiao long baozi (buns from the little steaming cage, or little dragon buns), probably the most famous Shanghai dish: small steamed dumplings full of tasty (and boiling hot!) broth and a dab of meat. The connoisseur bites a little hole into them first, sips the broth, then dips them in rice vinegar (cu) to season the meat inside.
Shanghai Museum
by chatterley
This museum is located beside the People's Square. We went there for a visit during our free-and-easy day. Admission ticket for an adult costs 20 RMB.
This museum exhibits artefacts related to Chinese history, and there are about 4 floors, with a number of different exhibition halls. Each hall has a different theme, eg. Calligraphy, Ceramics, Jade, Seal Carving, Minority Tribes etc. We really enjoyed this visit, looking at all those marvellous historical pieces. We saw a calligraphy scroll written by Wang Anshi, one of the most well-known political figures during the Song Dynasty; it was great to see his handwriting after reading and studying about him during our university days (me and hubby both studied Chinese Studies and Chinese Language). I also loved the ceramics pieces, especially those from the Tang Dynasty.
Jing'an Park
by cheezecake_deli
Jing'an Park is an oasis of greenery set amongst the skyscrapers of Nanjing West Road in the Jing'an district of Shanghai, directly opposite Jing'an Temple and metro station. Small but picturesque, it has a little lake and a little lawn, and is popular with locals and expats in the area. In the mornings, locals hold taichi sessions, while on Sunday mornings, there is a language corner for locals to practise speaking English.
