Visiting Shanghai exhibition centre

by vasahmad

Dear friends and fellow travellers.

I will be going to Shanghai on the 4th to 8th Sept 2006.
I am looking for a nice place/ hotel to say. Does anyone know of any places where there is a bit of action and night life. I will be attending the Everbright convention centre, so don’t want a place far away from there. I have been quoted a room in the hotel next door for RMB616 per/night. Is that a nice place and a good rate for a business class room. Can some one tell me please what there is to do in the evening around the area or any place interesting. Plus It’s my first time I’m going to this exhibition centre, so a bit of a guild also regarding the transport service from Pu Dong int’l airport.

Thanks and best regards

Well, that's not a wonderful location for nightlife and etc, you'll have to take the metro at least as far as Xujiahui or Hengshan Lu (around 2-3 stops) to get decent nightlife.
Try to get a cheaper rate on that hotel, or another hotel -- I think that's a bit high on the price.
Feel free to let me know if you'd like me to arrange for my regular cabbie to pick you up at Pudong airport when you arrive, or if you'd like me to help you book a suitable hotel (please specify and budget and your requirements, thanks). I'm studying in Shanghai.

Thank you ellyse,

The room booked at the Hotel is on the business floor and suppose to be a really nice room. This service is arranged buy the Exhibition centre organisation and I did check with other site to book and even direct. They came back with a higher rate. I don’t know about the timing I arrive into Pu Dong airport. Haven’t got that ticket yet. So don’t want your cabbie waiting around. I understand the method of travel around China and am not new to the country just haven’t been around Shanghai before. Realistically I was only or should only be in china from the 6th until the 8th of sept. 2006. I know it’s only a few days but just don’t really have the time to sightsee at this moment as am very busy at work. But I managed to blag a few extra day by saying I couldn’t get flight sorted. Hence why I don’t want to travel around but would like something near by the Everbright Convention Centre. I have 2 days to kill. Basically arriving on the 5th and out on the 9th would like to see at least a little bit off the place nearby. What area does the centre come under. Any good place to eat. I just don’t know what I’m in for or to expect. I just hope it’s not near or in the middle of nowhere and industrial area. . Let me know and if like meet up then you can show me what to see…lol is a short time.

Take care and thanks
Vas

Sorry, I wish I could meet up too, but I'll be in Yunnan when you arrive.
There's an old cathedral at Xujiahui (you're located in the Xuhui district) which you could take a look at. There're quite a lot of shopping centres and places to eat around Xujiahui, and also nightlife a bit further afield at Hengshan Lu. Do be warned that the metro stops pretty early though, around 2300.
There's a bus 42 from Shanghai Stadium (a metro stop or two away from Caobao Lu) which goes all the way to the Bund. It's not a very short/fast ride, but you might be interested if you have the time and don't mind seeing the city this way.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Packing List

by Sharrie

Not necessary since you can buy them (unlimited choices!) here. Awesome shopping experience! One of the very best in this world!!! & trust me, I've been to many! Lots of films though one can get them here as well. But, look at the number of photos I took, they are never enough of them!

If you use digital camera, bring as many cards as you can. I use a Sony, so it's memory sticks. They are v. expensive in Shanghai. Lots of RMB or US$. Credit cards are acceptable in most major departmental stores.

This city is a shoppers' paradise :)

Railway station

by yumyum

This is the main railway station. If you depart for Hongkong, then you go through customs and immigration here. The entrance is to the left as you stand in front of the building. If you want to buy something for the train, be sure to do so before you enter as there is nothing inside. There are plenty of little shops left and right of the railway station, yes, they sell toilet paper too.

Shopping in Shanghai

by maria_hz

Shanghai reputedly has the best shopping facilities on mainland China, and at least the most famous ones. Nanjing Road is *the* shopping street in China. It first became famous for its shops in the early part of the 1900s, and still retains the status. However, Nanjing Road is a fairly short stretch and prices may be a bit higher than elsewhere. I still like the Nanjing Road stretch for shopping as it is nice and compact and at the end of it, there is the Bund and the river :).

Huai hai Road is long and you will find almost anything on earth here. The eastern end features up-market shops and shopping centres, such as Lane Crawford housing Gucci, Boss, and Armani and further down, you can pop in to have a look at a Ferrari, should you like to buy one or just admire the sleek designs. Towards west, the prices go down, and the shopping centres cater for medium budget consumers.

For those of you who have heard of the huge Xiangyang market at the lower end of Huaihai Road, I am sorry to say that it closed at the end of June 2006 to give way for new developments.

Yuyuan gardens (chinese: ~{T%T0~})

by sunnywong

Located in the southern section of Shanghai, Yu Yuan is one of the famous ancient gardens south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Yu Yuan was formerly a private garden built four hundred years ago. This design of the garden was modeled on the imperial garden in Beijing. It covers an area of 20 thousand square meters with an excellent view of man-made rockery hills, terraces and pavilions.

Duo Lun Road- the historic Street

by conniechong

"Shi Ku Men or Stone Gate"

Not many people are now living inside this type of houses which blended features of east and west. There are now hardly be found in the city of Shanghai. Stone gates in Xintiandi are too well modified into commercial outlook, wasted.. Most original Stone Gate besides buildings at The Bund, I can however locate at this moment namely Duo Lun road, Tai Kang road and no. 76 Xing Yue road.

"At Duo Lun West Road"

An old well preserved "apartment".

"Inside Kaola Inn"

"The Monument of Street of famous people"

"Church at Duo Lun Road"

An old gate leads to many houses or apartment
