a week in Shanghai

by sinfan

I'm an expat in Shanghai. I've been here for only a month. With the coming weeklong vacation, all of my colleagues are either going home to their provinces or going abroad. I would have loved to visit other places in China but there aren't any more train tickets and I'm a little hesitant about going to far-flung places alone.

Anyway, I'd be left alone in Shanghai and I would like to ask for suggestions about things to do and places I could visit on my own. I live in the Minhang district and I don't have a very good sense of direction so detailed instructions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Shanghai excursions

The train to Suzhou is an easy trip to do from Shanghai. You should have no problem getting tickets for that nearby destination. Once you are in Suzhou then you can even board a bus to the town of Tongli. Ask your Chinese colleagues to write the name of that village for you and then you can make a day trip from Suzhou by flashing the card at the Suzhou bus station. All roads lead to Shanghai, so you won't get lost when it's time to return.

I agree, Suzhou and Zhou Zhuang would be very good options and they are very easy to reach from Shanghai

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Bring what you would have at home!

by rabbit06

You can always purchase extra luggage at good prices. Comfortable shoes, the rest you can purchase if you have a good hunt around....enjoy! Well i took what i would normally have in the bathroom at home and pleased i did. Woke up one morning requiring the aid of, blush), but you try and purchase this from a local pharmacy whilst clenching your cheeks and the girl behind the counter only speaks Shanghainese or Mandarin, BIG BIG problems for you!!!! So be a little cautious and be prepared for anything that may arrise!...Have a good time!! Take extra memory cards, although you can purchase them cheaper than at home if you speak Mandarin? We brought a 8GB for 188rmb, a lot cheaper than home and it is the latest HC version! I had a hepatitis and typhoid injection prior to leaving on the instruction of my GP and was happy i did, so not to worry about where and what i was eating or drinking!!! But be careful of the tap water, not all is suitable for drinking!! This is why you will find water coolers every where!

Easy and econmical way to travel, Shirley tells me to use the yellow cabs as they are a large company so if you have a problem it could be resolved and do not forget your receipt which has all the details including the cab number and if your Chinese is no good just point at the
If it is peak times or raining and all the cabs have passengers just take a short stroll where no one else is to hail one with suprising results!!!.....worked for us...lmao

Be amazed at the Shanghai Acrobats

by tirose

The Shanghai Acrobats are on the 'not to be missed' list while in Shanghai.
They are absolutely amazing and will have you on the edge of your seat with what they do.
It is not expensive but worth every Yang you pay to see them.

The Bund

by simcard

You can almost see Shanghai's history by walking down the bund. All these old buildings will remind you of Old Shanghai, while opposite across the Yangzi River, you see the most modern part of Shanghai. Actually it would be alot more beautiful to come here at night time.

"A place for working, learning, communicating and e"

It is not my hometown. My father was from this city, and according to the Chinese traditions, the city is regarded as the root of my life. However, to be honest, I have never stay there for more than two months in one session and it is not my favourate city. But it is really an exciting city, a place everybody can find his or her place and enjoy himself or herself.

A city comparable with New York, Paris, Hong Kong and Tokyo. A paradise in the world.
