Mao collectibles
by sailandpower
Where in Shanghai can I buy Mao and cultural revolution era collectibles? I just returned from Shanghai on business (I love your city, people and business work ethic). I will coming in again for 1 week and have one day where I can do some shopping.

I think it may me too late to get real mao collectibles in China. You may be able to get fakes (copies). I got some during my 1989 bike trip while in Beijing. Chinese friends that lived during that era told me what I have are authentic. They also said they thrown away what they had including the red book at the end of that terrible era.

I agree, everything that looks old here isn't really old. I suppose you don't care if they've been engineered to look old? You might want to try shopping around Dongtai Lu market (if you're here on a weekend), Yuyuan Bazaar or Duolun Lu Culture Street.

Oh but in case you're interested, the Shanghai Propaganda Posters Museum has authentic revolutionary propaganda posters for sale as well.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
Business Cards with Two Hands
by marciaca
When exchanging business cards, they are handed with two hands and you should receive them with two hands as well. Then you should look at it, flip it over, and then smile. They take business cards seriously, and nicer business cards are thought of as a success.
Great Transportation sytem, just one problem
by mcgruff75044
A large amount of it, especially the detailed information like pickup times and routes are all in Chinese.
The transportation is excellent for the general public in Shanghai, with bus, underground, taxis and trains that can get you anywhere just about. They have one of the worlds fastest trains, the MagLev, which can get you from RPV Airport to the Pudong district for about 100 Yuan. It beats a Taxi drive by 50 minutes and costs about 150 Yuan less. Taxi drivers are required to take two courses, Drive by Braille and Drive by Horn, so bring a 10 mg. Valium for your first ride.
Fares are as little as 1 Yuan for a bus ride, and a train with assigned seating and air conditioning to Suzhou, about 80 kilometers away is only 23 Yuan. The Chinese trains with sleepers are very comfortable and save a hotel bill if you take one over night. The beer is cold. Reme.ber that everyone amost uses the trains and bus lines, and a lot of people leave Shanghai early on the weekends, so if you plan to go out of town get your ticket in advance.
A great map of the Shanghai rail Subway System routes can be found on google Earth (google earth dot com ).
I recomend the following website for information about getting around Shanghai. The forums can be searched for an answer (the best way) or you can just post a question.

Too many to choose from!
by rabbit06 about Sea Palace Hotel Restaurant
Such a lovely restaurant, great service in our own room, beers just kept turning up (lol) and we had just a fantastic lunch here! So much to choose from all the local dishes, perhaps the frog or crab or shimp or beef or eel or you just have to try them all....lmao, great to back in Shanghai!
People's Square
by vincentf
A large city square right in the middle of the city. There is also an underground shopping arcade selling wool knit scarfs and hats during the wintertime. In addition, there are your regular eateries and record stores.
Shanghai - City of Lights
by princesshenrike
Alright. I say I live in London, but at the moment I'm in Shanghai on vacation where my parents live, so I'll start there.
My top 5 for Shanghai are: (in no specific order)
1. This tiny temple hidden near the Yu Yuan (Jade Gardens). It's only got two courtyards and a few statues, but the nuns in the nunnery there all know my brother and I and always give us sweeties when we visit.
2. The old French Concession (where my house is). The architecture of the buildings is beautiful and quietly preserved, while managing to stay on the most-wanted list of Shanghai's elite.
3. The Bund: the view from M on the Bund on a clear night is breathtaking, with the entire waterfront golden and lit up. It is equally stunning from the top of the Jin Mao.
4. Duomo & California Club in Park 97: two of Shanghai's finest nightspots, the former housed in an old church, the latter in the beautiful Fuxing Park.
5. The shopping: anywhere and everywhere!
