Sidetrip to Zhouzhuang/Suzhou?

by happyshirt

I've heard that zhouzhuang is a pretty watertown, and Also some canal spots in suzhou. which would be good for a day trip or overnite trip from shanghai? From research it seems that it is a good experience to just enjoy the towns at nite after the tourists have left? Any recomendations for places to stay there?

thanks.

Zhouzhuang is too touristy, Suzhou is now a city, Tongli is probably my favourite water village around Suzhou. For accommodation, try Zhengfu Caotang: http://www.zfct.net/jnsx/index.html
Otherwise you might also like to try Xitang in Zhejiang province: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1d57/f2e9f/

Hi Ellyse!! *wave* Thanks. Tongli it is then. how do i get there from shanghai?Lonely planet has instructions from Suzhou but not from shanghai. maybe a good idea to spend 1 nite away from the city?

Yes, spending a night in Tongli would be good if you have the time. :)
There're a number of ways to get to Tongli from Shanghai.
Some buses going to Wujiang, might stop at Tongli. Otherwise, it's about 25 RMB by taxi from Wujiang long-distance bus station to Tongli.
Next closest would be long-distance bus to Suzhou South long-distance bus station, then about 60 RMB by taxi to Tongli. It would be around 80 RMB by taxi from Suzhou North long-distance bus station, near Suzhou train station.
Or you could try a D train to Suzhou and then the 80 RMB taxi ride. There's also a bus from Suzhou train station, but it's not easy to find even if you understand some Chinese.

Change of plans. I need to cut my trip short so maybe will go to TongLi from pudong airport. Is there an easy way to get to Tongli from Pudong airport? my flight from Huangshan will get in about 2315 so maybe i'll take a morning bus to tongli and spend the next night there.

Re: Sidetrip to Zhouzhuang/Suzhou?

Yes, there're direct buses from Pudong airport to Tongli at 1000, 1150, 1250, 1610 and 1650. Fare should be 82 RMB. I think the most ideal (value-for-money) for you to stay overnight at the airport would be at the Motel168 there, it's located in between the 2 terminals.

Sorry, not very sure where to find the bus as I've taken it from Tongli Lakeview Hotel but not vice versa. I think the ride to Tongli should take about 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic conditions.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Full price shopping

by kphstar about XuJiaHui District

Plenty of shopping with so many interconnecting malls. However, I found it to be quite pricey because all the shops are selling originals. And there is little room for bargain with the non english speaking store attendants.

Sweat it out over a Lamb Hot Pot!

by xuessium about Xiao Fei Yang (Little Fat Lamb) Mongolian Hot Pot

Sweat it all out over a boiling Inner Mongolian Hot Pot consisting of 2 sections - one with spicy chilli soup, and the other clear herbal broth. What you do is that you order whatever cut of meat you desire, plus vegetables, herbs and mushrooms and then dunk it into the soup to cook them. The soup will impart a lovely aroma and flavour to the items. Beef and lamb slices are must order, as well as golden mushrooms, mountain yams and crunchy radicchio. Ox and Lamb phallus and testicles are also available. The lamb slices were sliced so thin that they soaked up the flavour of the broth. The golden mushrooms, mountain yams are great. The lamb phallus tasted like beef tendons!

View of the Bund from PuDong Waterfront

by MaosRedArmy

I prefer looking at the Bund and PuXi from the PuDong Waterfront over looking at PuDong from the Bund (the Pu Xi Waterfront).

While it is only my preference, I would encourge first time visitors to Shanghai to see both views of the Shanghai waterfront - from PuDong and PuXi.

The view from PuDong is a look back at Shanghai's past at the various architectures visible on the other side of the Huangpo River.

Also, there is a Starbucks on the PuDong side, which allows you to sip a Latte with probably one of the best views in the world.

Dongtai Road Antique Market

by Willettsworld

Dongtai Road Antique Market is a market mainly dealing with the porcelains, jade wares, bronze wares, wooden wares, calligraphy and paintings and embroidery utensils. There's also some Mao memorabilia. However most of what you see is just rubbish that is made to look antique and has been mass produced. Be careful!
