I decided upon the Yangtze Hotel for a couple of very important reasons. It was priced in the exact range I afforded for Shanghai and for the superb location the hotel was situated in. It is just one block from the People's Square, the Shanghai Museum and the Nanjing Lu pedestrian mall. Since I did not expect to spend much time in my room, I did not really care if the hotel its self was not exactly plush. In fact the Yangtze was decidedly mediocre. The hotel is rather old compared to many of the recently built hotels nearby. It dates from the 1930's and was designed in a rather art deco manner.
Unique Quality: Nothing about the Yangtze other than location was outstanding. The room was small (in fact the smallest I stayed in while in China) and only adequately maintained. It did have satellite TV. The hotel staff was rather indifferent concerning some of my attempts to change money. One said that I would have to go to bank while another said she could change it at the reception desk. There is really no bar or decent restaurant here. My price did not include breakfast so thankfully there was a Starbuck's across the street.
Directions: One block east of the People's Square.
this was according to me the best deal i have ever got during any of my trips.
centrally located in the centre of the city. just 5 mins walk away from nanjing street. and in front of people's square.
i would definately recommend this hotel to all. not a 5 star hotel but good enuf for a comfortable stay.
Unique Quality: the famous barbarossa restaurant is just 10mins walk from this place.
during my stay i even had walked to the bund from here. around 15mins and passing thru the interior streets of shanghai.
Directions: they are found in most hotel booking sites. so not so difficult to locate
Great, if slightly discombobulating hotel.
Pros: Great location off Renmin Park, interesting and nearly tasteful decor, cheap, friendly reception staff, flatscreen TV, balcony with interesting view, but most importantly COMPUTER IN ROOM WITH CHEAP NET ACCESS! All day for Y80.
Very exciting, this discovery immediately banished any criticism I had with the hotel particularly as my laptop had stopped working and I was dreading starting the internet cafe crawl.
Cons: Exposed wiring, mysterious gravel tray in room (for non-housetrained guests??), bathroom more or less IN the room, rock hard beds, maids who cheerfully ignore the Do Not Disturb sign.
This hotel has very reasonable rates. We paid around 60$ pr night for a double room. Very clean and the staff sports a very good service. It's located to blocks away from the Nanjing Road. Take the metro to People's Square or Central Henan Road. The green line, I think, from Pudong, if you arrive by Mag-Lev, which I really suggest you do.
Directions: Nanjing Road - Shopping street
