This Westin only opened in 2002, making it Shanghai's newest 5* hotel.. It has a superb location, as it is only a 5-minute walk from the Bund. It is a 26-storey tower block, with 301 rooms. The rooms are quite small and have subdued lighting and ultra-comfortable "Heavenly Beds", so it's easy to fall asleep. There is a well-equipped office-style desk for the business traveller. The fitness center is quite difficult to find, and it was closed for part of my visit, as Tony Blair was using it. The hotel's indoor pool was a bit too small for my liking - a couple of strokes and you are already across it! The hotel's restaurant prices are very expensive, but the quality of the food and service is excellent. There is a great buffet breakfast, with Chinese, Japanese and Western dishes.
The Westin is one of the new , landmark buildings in Shanghai. You can see it from miles away. If you are looking for a base for sightseeing, then this is a good place to be. We stayed here for 3 nights while my husband had business in Shanghai. It is a gorgeous hotel with first-rate service & amenities. The desk clerks are very helpful - they looked up places we wanted to go and wrote them in Chinese on our destination cards and also provided cash/change graciously. There was free access to the Internet in our room; lots of convenient touring & business supplies (pens, paper, maps, magazines, shopping bag). We ordered room service each morning - the prices were reasonable, especially for delicious food delivered into our room at the exact time requested (with a fresh Gerber daisy, too!). The laundry service was prompt, reasonable, and trustworthy.
The huge bathroom, interestingly enough, was our favorite feature. It was simply beautiful - all grey marble with chrome details, frosted glass doors for the shower & toilet areas, comfortable soaking tub with shelves and ledges and a window to the main room (with adjustable blinds), that amazing bowl sink (but watch out, the faucet is rather close to the edge and can splash water), brushed metal cups for the complimentary bottled water. The lights can be brightened or dimmed according to your needs...There is also a speaker so you can listen to the TV while getting ready :) Their shampoo, conditioner & bath gel are quite nice - a mild spicy floral scent. And I can't forget to mention the thick, cozy robes & soft slippers (you can buy them, along with the sheets - there is a catalog by the bed!).
