In and Around Shanghai

There are 2 major airports in Shanghai. An international traveller usually arrives in Pudong Airport, while Hongqiao airport caters to domestic travellers. Both are some distance out from the urban areas, so expect around 30-60 minutes travelling time to your hotel by taxi. You may find yourself caught in a traffic jam, even late at night.
There is a metro system in Shanghai, though I've never tried it myself.
Taxis are clean and affordable. Only little problem is that it can be somewhat difficult to get an empty cab when it's raining or in the evening.
Combination attraction and shopping

THe Gardens themselves are within an enclave of bazar shops and restaurants. Be sure to eat dumplings there! The gardens are beautiful, with a lot of attention to architectural detail. Even the paving stones make a mosaic. We enjoyed strolling with our host, but also "tailed" a tour group with an English speaking guide and listened to her explaining the sights. There are many photo ops here. Look for the wall with a roof made as a dragon. There are souvenier shops inside the actual gardens, but we found them unremarkable compared with the many shops surrounding. Good spot to buy a name chop (stamp with your name in Chinese), as well as silk clothing. As everywhere, bargain hard 50% off asking price. DOn;t be shy when they ask what you would be willing to pay or hand you calculator. You would be surprised hom any deals are accepted when you say "too much" and start to leave.
The Huangpu River
by Willettsworld
The Huangpu River (meaning literally "Yellow Bank River") is the main river that flows through Shanghai. It's 97km in length and where Shanghai gets most of its drinking water from, so remember that when you're taking a boat trip upon it!

Night view of the Pearl Tower and the Pudong area, as seen from the Bund. Photo taken around 9pm on 29-July-01.
I've been to Shanghai twice, first time was in April of 1986, and then in July of 2001.
When I was there in 1986, it seemed that fashionable style was to wear either blue or green Mao outfits. But what a shock, 15 years later, just about everyone was wearing western clothing.
What impressed me back in 1986 was that amount of infrastructure construction that was going around the clock. One time we were headed back to our hotel at 10:30pm, and construction workers were still working on raising a new building.
Coming back 15 years later, I can see fruits of their labor. Today Shanghai is a throughly modern city.
