DVD's

by fionaod

I've one other question, this time about the DVD's in Shanghai. im wondering if the Region marking on the Boxes are reliable? I'm interested in buying a few box sets and live in europe, it seems like a waste of energy carrying them and money if they turn out not to be Region 2. I'd imagine the sales people will tell me what ever they feel I'd like to hear!!thanks

Buying Box sets? Legit or Copy? If they are copies, make sure they work before you leave China. Even if they are "Legit" then don't count on them working. After all, T.I.C. (This is China). Best bet is try not to pay too much so if you have to toss them, it will not hurt as bad.

This is quite a complex issue. These codes are a voluntary compliance arrangement between a DVD industry group and the movie studios who are in turn protecting exhibitors. Since December 31, 1999 DVD players should control the region code by hardware rather than by software so it is not easy to change the code of a player after the 5th code choice. Even so, many newer DVD players will play any code disk. Many disks sold in China have no region code bit so they will play in any player that does not reject uncoded disks. I have tried dozens of disks that I bought in China on a friend's player in the states and no problem. Since success on one player does not guarantee success on another player, you will be taking a chance.

Copies or legit? The highest price I have seen on a one-disk movie in China is about 3 USD (20RMB). Can that be legit? The lowest price I have seen is 4 RMB but many brick and mortar stores sell for 6-8 RMB. Sets are almost always priced at an exact multiple of the single disk price.

Your home counrty will probably have restrictions on bringing in copyright flaunting products. I will not stick my neck out to advise you on this topic.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Chinese Bronzes..

by marsistanbul

The Bronze Age in China started in 21st century BC and lasted about 2000 years through Xia,Shang and Zhou dynasties. The Bronzes,as a precious metal ware, were mainly used for ceremonial purposes by the upper class at that time. The variety and quantity of the bronzes that be used in an occassion could be a reflection of the owner's social status and power. It was high technically cast in great varieties of category, sophisticated shapes and beautiful designs, and distributed in the middle and lower reaches both of the Yellow and Changjiang rivers and some remote border areas. The ancient Chinese bronze technology is one of the most important achievements of Chinese civilization.

In and Around Shanghai

There are 2 major airports in Shanghai. An international traveller usually arrives in Pudong Airport, while Hongqiao airport caters to domestic travellers. Both are some distance out from the urban areas, so expect around 30-60 minutes travelling time to your hotel by taxi. You may find yourself caught in a traffic jam, even late at night.

There is a metro system in Shanghai, though I've never tried it myself.

Taxis are clean and affordable. Only little problem is that it can be somewhat difficult to get an empty cab when it's raining or in the evening.

Combination attraction and shopping

THe Gardens themselves are within an enclave of bazar shops and restaurants. Be sure to eat dumplings there! The gardens are beautiful, with a lot of attention to architectural detail. Even the paving stones make a mosaic. We enjoyed strolling with our host, but also "tailed" a tour group with an English speaking guide and listened to her explaining the sights. There are many photo ops here. Look for the wall with a roof made as a dragon. There are souvenier shops inside the actual gardens, but we found them unremarkable compared with the many shops surrounding. Good spot to buy a name chop (stamp with your name in Chinese), as well as silk clothing. As everywhere, bargain hard 50% off asking price. DOn;t be shy when they ask what you would be willing to pay or hand you calculator. You would be surprised hom any deals are accepted when you say "too much" and start to leave.

The Huangpu River

by Willettsworld

The Huangpu River (meaning literally "Yellow Bank River") is the main river that flows through Shanghai. It's 97km in length and where Shanghai gets most of its drinking water from, so remember that when you're taking a boat trip upon it!

Yubert's Shanghai Page

Night view of the Pearl Tower and the Pudong area, as seen from the Bund. Photo taken around 9pm on 29-July-01.

I've been to Shanghai twice, first time was in April of 1986, and then in July of 2001.

When I was there in 1986, it seemed that fashionable style was to wear either blue or green Mao outfits. But what a shock, 15 years later, just about everyone was wearing western clothing.

What impressed me back in 1986 was that amount of infrastructure construction that was going around the clock. One time we were headed back to our hotel at 10:30pm, and construction workers were still working on raising a new building.

Coming back 15 years later, I can see fruits of their labor. Today Shanghai is a throughly modern city.
