how many days in Shanghai

by m0y

Hi all

It's my first time to shanghai. I'm planning a trip for 2nd week of March, how many days would I need in Shanghai?

I hear that you can get really great tailor made suits in Shanghai, can anyone recommend somewhere.

I would like to go to Shanghai to see sights, party at night and eats the wonderful food.

Thanks

For nightlife, go to Xin tian di. Once there choose any bar you fancy. Shanghai is famous for the The Bund, Jing Mao Tower, and Nanjing Road. Regarding tailored suits, no idea. Sorry. But there I swear I saw some along Nanjing road but they should cost a lot.

If you are talking about Shanghai only, I think maxium 3 days is enough. However, from Shanghai you can have day trip to some water towns and Suzhou (which I'll recommend to stay a night), then it will be very flexible.

Shanghai is not a typical China experience as it is a huge, bustling, modern city with not very many historical or cultural attractions. Most people come to Shanghai for shopping, bars, bright lights and huge buildings. Decide for yourself how many days you need for those features. After that, you need about three days for history and culture. I recommend a full day at the Shanghai Museum at People's Square if you like art and historical objects and the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum in Pudong district. You'll have to tolerate a lot of entertainment exibits in the latter including a fake elevator decent 2 miles down into a fabricated coal mine but dig through thoroughly because the overall experience is quite good. The spider room is my favorite.

The local style of food is sweet and mostly devoid of spice. "Hun dun" (pronounced "hu-en du-en"), a type of dumpling cooked in broth is very polular. Crawfish, a favored dish of mine in Louisiana, is ubiquitous also in Shanghai although I shy away from it here knowing how polluted are the rivers. One distinctive speciality is deep-fried "bad smell tofu" that wafts up from almost any street corner. If you tire of that you can find many non-Shanghai style restaurants such as Sichuan, Hunan, Dongbei, Xinjiang and even Lanzhou-style beef noodles. There's a McDonald's or KFC on every third corner in some areas if you get homesick.

I often hear about the famous Shanghai tailor-made suits (or "bespoke" as the Brits and Canadians are wont to say) but perhaps someone has confused this aspect with Hong Kong where tailor-made suits are all the rage. I have noticed tailor-made suits in 6 other provinces so perhaps it is every place's speciality. I'm sure you'll find them if you make a few inquiries.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Dress code

by cinthya_in_victoria

Once chinese reach the age of 30 or 40, they tend to dress conservatively and in dark colors. In the city, people wear jeans, t-shirts and skirts, andmany young people dress provocatively and dye their hair. Don't worry too much about what you wear, but try to aviod looking scruffy. It is acceptable for male and female to wear shorts in hot weather.

Subway

by marciaca

The Subway is very easy to use. Everything is in English and is clearly marked. When you get down to the tracks, its very easy to see which way you are headed.

Most subway tickets cost 3 yuan each way. Long distances will be 4 or 5.

oh yes they ordered the beef for me!!!

On the top floor of 353 Plaza and under the glass roof you feel a sense of space with natural light overhead and just wondering through the mall making your way to the top is a pleasant experience on it's own!
We enjoyed a very relaxed lunch with the usual local dish's that Shangainese locals love to eat! Well by the these pic's there's not much left.....lol, but was deliciously good! and if you look closely the beef's in, or was in the foil over a burner to keep hot and juicy!!!....yummy! could not eat another thing as this was just such a nice lunch with big bottles of tsingtao for Rabbit....OMG!!!!

Oriental Pearl TV Tower

by Mez77

The Oriental Peral TV Tower is apparently Asia's tallest tower, so the view from the top would be quite a site. I didn't take this option as I preferred to spend more time on ground level getting to know the city, but if you are into sites, this would one to visit. You will need to get to the 'new Shanghai' side of the river and can do so by taxi, subway, tourist tunnel, or ferry. A fellow traveller mentioned that the elevator ride is quite the thrill.

Shanghai--Shining Star since 1920

by conniechong

Shanghai is indeed a place where you can find your dreams come true. It will never rest, unless your body really can't take it ;-p
Recommanded spot :
Yu Yuan Garden- If you like to eat 'xiao long bao', just go to the right hand side of Starbucks and you may see there's a long queue of people waiting for the unforgetable bite.
Shanghai Museum - It deserves your whole afternoon there. Try it!!
Jin Mao Tower- The 88-storey located in the center of the Lujiazui Finance & Trade Zone, Pudong New Area, is 420.5 meters high with a total construction area of 290,000 square meters. It currently ranks first in China and third in the world in height.
The Bund - Of course, your tour is considered complete if you really step on the ground of The Bund. The night is full of glamour, a dazzling gem in the night. I was reluctant to leave..... It keeps my sweetest memory, and still waiting for me. I will be back...................

"Oriental Pearl Tower"

Located at Lu Jia Jui. It is a remark of Shanghai, worth going, if not, worth climbing...

"The International Opium Commission"
