New Year's in Shanghai: any tips?

by Sanneastrid

Hey everybody! :)

In less than two weeks me and my friend M. are departing on a six-months backpacking trip through Asia and Oceania and we are starting out in China.
On the 29th of December we arrive in Shanghai and we plan on celebrating New Years there!!
I was wondering whether anyone has any cool experiences with celebrating New Years in Shanghai? I'm aware that the Chinese New Year is celebrated later, but maybe someone knows some nice pubs/events we could visit? Maybe an expats bar? Or do the Chinese also celebrate our New Year a little bit?

Thanks in advance!

Just go out to the Bund and you will fnd many expats bars. some of the great ones are in the major hotel like the Grand Hyatt. Go up to the 92nd floor and watch the light shows along the river. the official Chinese New Year I think is feb 7th, but that from no experience...but then , that is why I tell you in your other post that the transportation might be a problem. there is a VT member name Ellyse in Shanghai....maybe if she sees this, she would help or just give her a shout out. enjoy the New Year Cheers Tommy x

Travel Tips for Shanghai

The fabric market at...

by wallflower

The fabric market at Dongjiaban road is very impressive. You have never seen such a collection of fabric in your life. Bargain like crazy though.

Plus they sell everything in every color.

Fudan University neigbourhood. Take a stroll along handan lu (part in between Guoding rd and Wu jiao chang) and you'll be able to upgrade your software and CD collection for a max. of 10RMB (a little over 1USD) per program/CD. Make sure you check the software is in English though.

Take the 55 bus or the 910 bus to drive you back to Waitan (the Bund). 2 RMB, a nice view (some are double deckers) and something most tourists never do. The bus stops at every stop. No need to ring a bell

Taxi

by simcard

There are different taxi companies in Shanghai, and of course, with different qualities. If you want the best service, always look for the cab with the color as it shows in the picture. Otherwise, the white cab and orange one can be good too.

Getting a taxi during rainy days or during rush hours is just impossible in Shanghai. I wish I could give u some tips but I still haven't found out yet.. I personally just avoid going out during that time if I have to depend on taxi to get around!

When you get out of the airport, always always always go to the taxi line to get your ride. There will be people approaching u to use their taxi. Do NOT follow them. Those are the ones without taxi license and they usually like to rip off people who are new to the city. They don't issue u receipts either and u can't even find a place to complain if something bad happens.

Yuyuan Garden

by Burtty

Yuyuan garden is an historical Chinese Garden. Outside the garden, there were some buildings in the traditional Chinese style. Inside most of these buildings are the restaurant or the shops for the tourist. Besides Yuyuan Garden, a tea caf'e called Huxingting is in the center of the lake through a zigzag Chinese bridge. A famous traditional dim sum restaurant called Lu Bo Lang and another famous Nanxiang Bun Shop are also located around the lake. City God temple is also in the vincinity.

Huang Pu River Viewing Deck (ch: ~{;FFV=-9[9bL(~})

by sunnywong

The Huang Pu River Viewing Deck is situated on the riverside ranging from the Hunag Pu River to the Xin Kai River with a total length of 1700 meters. It is constructed on the empty-box-style flood-prevention wall that extends toward the Huang Pu River. At the top of the wall is the viewing deck. Its floor is composed of 140000 colorful tiles and granite stones. There are 32 viewing balconies with semi-circle railings made of iron openwork shaped in flower, 64 square lamps of pillar style on the side facing the Huang Pu River. 21 bowel-shaped flowerbeds, square pavilions of pillar style, hexagonal pavilions and man-made marble chairs of different shapes for tourists on the viewing deck.
