transport to Hangzhou
by leeljt
What is the least complicated way to reach Hangzhou from Shanghai on Sunday October 22? I am staying at 601 Heng Feng Road,Shanghai Post & Communication Hotel. I am 100% ignorant of Chinese writing, carrying luggage and traveling alone.
Thank you.
RE: Transport to Hangzhou
by cheezecake_deli
I recently made this trip by train, which is easy enough, I think, even if you don't understand Chinese. The majority of trains to Hangzhou depart from Shanghai South Station, which is on Metro Line 1 (red line) - NOT Shanghai Main Station. Most trains arrive at Hangzhou Main Station, although some arrive at Hangzhou East Station, which is slightly further away from Hangzhou city centre. A one-way ticket on soft seat should cost no more than RMB50 (about USD6), which gives you a seat reservation (i.e. carriage number and seat number) as well. If you have to be on a particular train, it is best to buy the ticket(s) in advance from the station, as trains can be packed at peak times. English signs are present in Shanghai South Station, but it is best to learn to recognise the characters for Hangzhou before you travel. Have fun!
Travel Tips for Shanghai
Things you should bring to Shanghai!
by thescene
Nice comfortable shoes and a nice jacket or sweater depending on the weather is needed. It's always good to bring some medicines to a foreign land especially in a place where language can be a barrier to getting what you really need. Just basic medicines for an upset stomach, fever, cough and colds. Shanghai is a beautiful city and you will be tempted to film/take pictures of all the sites and sounds of the city. You will need to bring extra camera batteries, film and memory card. Be sure to bring the name and location of your hotel as well as the names of the siteseeing spots in Chinese. This will help your cab driver get to where you want to go. Al
Maglev to Pudong Airport
by lindyz
We had planned to take the Maglev (Magnetic Levitation Train) from Shanghai to Pudong Airport, but decided against it as we had very heavy luggage. The maglev is the fastest train in the world, reaching speeds of up to 431 kph. It travels 30km from Shanghai to Pudong in less that 7 minutes! We will have to do this exciting train trip next time we visit Shanghai. Instead, we got a taxi to Pudong airport. The taxi ride took about one hour and the cost one way was 210rmb. Pudong Airport is MASSIVE (another word to describe China apart from HUGE!) It has several terminals, but amazingly enough we were checked in within 5 minutes of finding the right check-in line!
The Shanghai Museum
by Paul2001
The Shanghai Museum is often regarded as the finest museum in China. I think that it probably has few true rivals as museums is not a strong point about the country. For certain, the Shanghai Museum is the cultural highlight of the city and a must see for anyone desiring an insight into Chinese culture.
The Shanghai Museum is divided according to theme rather the more common method of sectioning off each gallery as according to dynasty. The advantage of this for most travelers, is that you can easily skip a section of the museum if a certain cultural aspect does not interests you (I just cannot get into calligraphy). However each gallery is extremely well displayed and it is worth taking the time to visit them all. I personally enjoyed the Gallery of Ancient Chinese Ceramics. I also found the Gallery of Arts and Crafts by Chinese Minorities to be quite fascinating especially in light of the fact that I had almost finished my journey through China and this gallery offered a great cultural overview of my experiences. The Gallery of Ancient Chinese Paintings is the best collection of Chinese painting that I saw in the country. The galleries feature sculpture and bronze works are also held in very high regard.
A visit to the Shanghai Museum will cost you Y20 which is a very low price considering the size of the collection. The museum is open from 9am to 5pm from Sunday to Friday. On Saturdays it is open until 8pm.
Yuyuan Garden
by socrates_07
After all the crowd we found ourself in a very nice and quiet park. Its a classical garden with a history of more than 400 years. Halls, chambers, pavilions, rockeries and flowing streams all express the essence of the Ming and Qing dynasty garden architecture. And if you wanna drink some tea, also no problem. You will find a Tea house there as well...
