American in Shanghai
by asianbelle
The restaurant is part of the very exclusive Shanghai American Club. A fine dining restaurant and open only to members and their guests.
One wall of the restaurant is made of glass and gives you a good view of the Bund and the Oriental Pearl Broadcasting and TV Tower. I was in awe of my surroundings that I forgot what I had. Must have been clubhouse sandwich and ice tea.

Tiles and Text To Raised Shanghai Bathroom Expectations.
I won't forget a meeting with one particular Finance Officer at an internationally renowned retailer, in Shanghai. The CFO's desk was a model for minimalist efficiency. A single sheet of paper marooned on the sea of teak. One fountain pen. The tiniest of computer keyboards. And a trendy telephone.
Behind him, hanging on the wall, laser printed in black onto white A4, and framed in gold, were these words of wisdom....

SATISFACTION

REALITY / EXPECTATION

His entire world reduced to a formula. A pretty good formula one could argue. Though I’m not convinced it’s the chatty style I’d use with my family, chums and work-pals.
When I popped back to the hotel that evening I realized why my Shanghai bathing experience was less than orgasmically satisfied. My musical expectations had been raised while my moist, audible reality had remained constant. Where was the in bathroom violinist, as alluded to on the ceramics?
Fortunately, there wasn’t more Chinese helpfulling signaging messages next to the lav. Nor was there a cellist painted on the tile above.
