by normsafc

Hotel: it depends how much you want to pay... I think the best area is the Bund, because is close to everything and easy to reach both by taxi and public transportations. I stayed there, in Pudong and in the French Concessions but I have to say that for a few days I would suggest the Bund. There's a Sofitel in Nanjinglu, not bad, and another Accor hotel directly on the river, I stayed in both and they are good. There is also cheaper hotels, for instance the Nanjing Hotel (Nanjinglu) which is not bad, clean and comfortable but no charme at all!! I payed 300 RMB per night 2 years ago.
However for hotels in China look at www.ctrip.com, you will find plenty of offers with payment at check out.
For the weather... AHEM... Shanghai in August is simply HOT!! But if you live that, you'll have no problems!!!

the weather of Aug. in Shanghai , should be start to be cooler, but sometime is hot, cozz July is hot in Shanghai.

July and August are punishingly hot and humid.

Stay on the puxi side and someplace very near a metro line. Metro is the most convenient for getting around the city. The Sofitel as mentioned is a good choice because it's on the interchange stop (People's Square). There are plenty of cheaper options in that area too, though.

Stay in the Jing An district. This is the old French concession area. It is near the subway, and taxis are cheap and easy to find, so don't worry about being able to go around town. The restaurants and hotels are very good in this district, and they provide English menus and service for the tourists.

August is hot and humid everywhere in China. It is especially bad in the Hangzhou and Nanjing area. Chinese call these furnace cities.

August is stiflingly hot and muggy. Try not to visit in this season, unless a) you have no sweat glands or b) you don't mind being bathed in sweat within 5 seconds of stepping out of airconditioned places.
Too many choices for accommodation. Indicate your expected price range and how many people you're travelling with. I usually recommend staying in the French Concession area or around People's Square/Nanjing Lu pedestrian street.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

I was impressed by the Pu Dong...

by Quiquejavi

I was impressed by the Pu Dong zone. This is the new Manhattan for the XXI century.
In other way the Old Shanghai in the night was a strong experience. It seemd to me to be in the colonization times, when Shanghai was the golden door to China. Walking the Bund in the evening was a refreshing experience of live.

shops, shops and more shops!

by rabbit06 about Cheepu Lu

Looking for a bargain you will find it here with famous brand names that they tell me are factory outlets or end of runs?? ok, that maybe correct but who cares the shopping is fantastic! Once you get over the initial shock of stalker type sales people who follow you around offering all sorts of goods and accept some of your own as we did on the clothing floor, who were quite helpful (husband and wife) and not that intimidating after all, even offering to show rabbit where the mens room was and informing him that it is 3rmb to use...lol Hope we get them on our next shopping trip here! Shirley came away with a lot of lady's clothing and rabbit could not help himself, spent up large on brand name t-shirts and sweatshirts, which are in his size....so lucky! Some even had the correct labels such as Billabong and Quicksilver, wow!!!.....sshhiisshhhhh................lmao! Start bargaining at 10% of the asking price as there are so many selling the same or similar products, they will call you back if you decide to walk off. Brand named t-shirts you can get for 30rmb or $5.00 NZ now that's fantastic shopping and i think Lindyz would have had kittens here, taken along her bank manager and a removal truck!!

Calm within the chaos

by SPW

We arrived at the Yuyuan gardens on a Saturday afternoon, probably the worst possible time as we had to make our way past a long line of beggars and hawkers, sometimes struggling in single file through the crowds, but once we entered the garden area the crowds thinned and it was possible to find moments of quiet in the beautiful surrounds. Like all gardens there were several pavilions, but there was also a small theatre where we just missed seeing a musical performance!
I wasn't feeling well and did not feel up to tackling the crowded bazaar area, but appreciated the calm of the gardens.

Shanghai at night

by Pichayada

"Introduction"

From a small fishing village, now Shanghai becomes a huge city. It has grown very fast. You probably won't be able to see small houses anymore. A number of luxurious hotels are here. The former leader wanted Shanghai to be the centre of financial affairs and banks. He planned to make Shanghai ahead of Hong Kong in 2010.
Traffic in Shanghai is very busy, however, there are lots of new roads.

"By river"

At night, the area called Wai Tan having lots of nice neo classic style buildinds has amazing view.

"City centre"

Nanjing road is full of people at night walking around and shopping. Shanghai is a leading shopping place of China
