Transportation from Port to Pudong Airport April 24, 2009

by LynStu

I need to get my clients from the CruisePort in Shanghai to the Pudong Aiport on Friday, April 24, 2009. Their ship docks at 1100AM. Their flight departs
at 3:45PM. They should be off of the ship between 12:00-12:30PM. Should they try to get to the MagLev train (8 minutes to airport) and where is the closest station or will they have enough time for a taxi? I understand that the cab needs to be paid for in local currency. Is it possible to pre-book a taxi? They should check in for their flight by 1:45PM.

normally there should be lots of taxis waiting for a cruise ship at the dock. I would go straight by taxi as it is not that easy to haul luggages onto and off the Maglev train, plus there is a good 10-15 walk from the Maglev train station to the airport check in counters.

Be sure to check the terminal where your client's flight will depart from, there are now Terminal 1 and 2 in Pudong and again a 20 minute walk in between the two terminals.

I do have a regular driver who would do an airport transfer, if that would put your mind more at ease. VTMail me if necessary.
Please note I'm NOT a tour agent looking for business!

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Cheap shopping

by ZenLady34 about Xiang Yang Market Place

Xiang Yang market place is full of clothes, bags, table clothing etc but do remember to check the quality before buying.

This is a real bargainer's paradise.

I would call the market as a "Fake Market" but hey, one can do really good shopping there.

The New Xiang Yang Market has been relocated The address is :
Shanghai Hong Qiao Datong Tang Building
No. 461 Jin Hui Road There are plenty of things to buy from scarfs to fake handbag's. From souvenirs to jeans. Bargain, bargain bargain - thats my advise. As an extreme example: a girl asked 180yuan for a hairpin (like two fingers to put your hair up) and we ended up paying 4 yuan to her. This was because I had seen similar hairpins in a local groceries for 3 yuan and I told her that.

Authentic Shanghainese food in central Shanghai

by aukahkay about Silver Tree Restaurant

When you enter this restaurant, it will not be apparent immediately that it is a Chinese restaurant. The decor is somewhat Mediterranean. The menu consists mainly of Shanghainese dishes although there is also a selection of Cantonese dishes.
This restaurant is a favourite among the locals and tourists alike. Unlike most Chinese restaurants in Shanghai, this restaurant has English translation in the menu with colour photos of the dishes. Try the crispy skin pigeon. It is a delicacy - the skin is grilled and crispy.
Another typical Shanghai dish is the Shanghainese steamed white chicken - it is a favourite speciality among the Shanghainese.

Even if you resent...

Even if you resent globalisation and modernisation, do pay a visit to the Pudong New Area. Here you can find the fastest changing skyline of Asia. Highlights include the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the
JINMAO Building (see photo) which at 420m is the third largest building in the world (after the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the Seard Tower in Chicago). Locals say it reminds one of a Chinese pagoda. You decide, but one thing is certain: this building is very impressive and it was built in a pretty short time. If you looked at a picture of Shanghai taken in say 1997 this building would still be nowhere.
Jinmao is the newest landmark of Shanghai and it is now home (from the 53rd floor upwards) to the Hyatt Regency Shanghai Hotel.

Shanghai Travel Guide

by lightswang

Shanghai, Hu for short, is a renowned international metropolis drawing more and more attention from all over the world. Situated on the estuary of Yangtze River, Shanghai serves as the most influential economic, financial, international trade, cultural, science and technology center in East China. Also it is a popular tourist destination, vistors can sense the pulsating development of modern China.

Originally a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai grew to importance in the 19th century due to its favorable port location and as one of the cities opened to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanking.[7] The city flourished as a center of commerce between east and west, and became a multinational hub of finance and business by the 1930s.[8] After 1990, the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping resulted in intense re-development and financing in Shanghai, and in 2005 Shanghai became the world's largest cargo port.[9] Shanghai will hold the World Expo 2010, the largest event in China since the 2008 Olympics.
