Cheap shopping
by ZenLady34 about Xiang Yang Market Place
Xiang Yang market place is full of clothes, bags, table clothing etc but do remember to check the quality before buying.
This is a real bargainer's paradise.
I would call the market as a "Fake Market" but hey, one can do really good shopping there.
The New Xiang Yang Market has been relocated The address is :
Shanghai Hong Qiao Datong Tang Building
No. 461 Jin Hui Road There are plenty of things to buy from scarfs to fake handbag's. From souvenirs to jeans. Bargain, bargain bargain - thats my advise. As an extreme example: a girl asked 180yuan for a hairpin (like two fingers to put your hair up) and we ended up paying 4 yuan to her. This was because I had seen similar hairpins in a local groceries for 3 yuan and I told her that.
Authentic Shanghainese food in central Shanghai
by aukahkay about Silver Tree Restaurant
When you enter this restaurant, it will not be apparent immediately that it is a Chinese restaurant. The decor is somewhat Mediterranean. The menu consists mainly of Shanghainese dishes although there is also a selection of Cantonese dishes.
This restaurant is a favourite among the locals and tourists alike. Unlike most Chinese restaurants in Shanghai, this restaurant has English translation in the menu with colour photos of the dishes. Try the crispy skin pigeon. It is a delicacy - the skin is grilled and crispy.
Another typical Shanghai dish is the Shanghainese steamed white chicken - it is a favourite speciality among the Shanghainese.

Even if you resent globalisation and modernisation, do pay a visit to the Pudong New Area. Here you can find the fastest changing skyline of Asia. Highlights include the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the
JINMAO Building (see photo) which at 420m is the third largest building in the world (after the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the Seard Tower in Chicago). Locals say it reminds one of a Chinese pagoda. You decide, but one thing is certain: this building is very impressive and it was built in a pretty short time. If you looked at a picture of Shanghai taken in say 1997 this building would still be nowhere.
Jinmao is the newest landmark of Shanghai and it is now home (from the 53rd floor upwards) to the Hyatt Regency Shanghai Hotel.
