Only 2 days in Shanghai...

by Jeannette1

My son will be in Shanghai on business for the first time. Unfortunately he will have only 2 or maybe 3 days to visit Shanghai.

Any ideas as to what he MUST see and how to plan these 2 or 3 days so that he can get a good feel for this city.
thank you
Jeannette

D1: visit shanghai museum at people square, downtown in the morning; then yu garden, downtown in the afternoon, may enjoy traditional chinese tea or famous snack- xiaolongbao (with meat or shrimp stuffing)by the pond; night life at xintiandi by huaihai road, hundreds of bars & restaurants and thousands of westerns there;
D2: visit qibao, a place similar to zhouzhuang, with rivers, ancient buildings and bridges but not far from downtown, just 20km from the bund; or may try zhouzuang 1 day tour; have dinner by the bund enjoying both food & night piece of this city.

What're his sightseeing interests? When will he be visiting?

He will be in Shanghai on October 9th. He has lots of interests but I think he likes to find out more about the Chinese culture, history and architecture...whatever is special about Shanghai. He has traveled a lot in Europe but it will be his first time in Asia.
It's really too bad that he does not have much time in Shanghai. Hopefully, he'll go back.

Hmmm, my picks would be the Bund, Nanjing Lu pedestrian street, walking in the French Concession, Yuyuan Gardens and Bazaar, brunch at famous Nanxiang xiaolongbao restaurant in Yuyuan Bazaar, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Municipal History Museum, dinner at Super Brand Mall in Pudong with view of the Bund, bird's-eye view and drinks at Cloud 9 bar in Grand Hyatt (87th floor of Jinmao Tower)... etc! Send me a VTMail if you'd like me to put this into a more coherent itinerary for the 2 days, or ask him to email me directly. :)

Thank you, Ellyse and Helen.
Good to hear that the weather will be OK. He was worried about the humidity.
I am emailing him your recommendations. It's very frustrating for him to have so little time in Shanghai but it's a business trip!

When's he coming? I'd be happy to meet up if I'm in town.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

bird bath

Bring something with wheels and another bag that expands Good walking shoes with a little bit of fashion in them. Don't be fooled by the chinese girls that wear heels all day. They are tiny and lightweight on their feet compared to most Americans Bring your bug repellent for the warm weather. Also a package of travel baby wipes for cleanup when no water is available. A small bottle of hand sanitizer is also a feel good relief.
Meds over the counter. Sleep aid for adjusting to change of time. Imodium and or Pepto Bismol for tummy problems. Tylenol PM for general walking and hard beds. A small portable umbrella is good for the sunshine as well as the rain. The chinese women use them when walking and it really helps when it's muggy and you need a break from the heat.

Pudong Airport shuttle buses

by cheezecake_deli

I've recently discovered a secret for dirt cheap and easy travel between Pudong airport and central Shanghai - the shuttle buses. There are 8 lines in total, travelling between PVG and a number of locations in central Shanghai, including Jing'an (the one I took), Zhongshan Park, Hongkou, both train stations and Hongqiao airport. One-way fares cost between RMB16 to RMB30 (2009 prices). The shuttle buses are easy to find at the airport, in the transport centre between the two terminals. There are lots of leaflets in the airport with detailed information on price and times. The shuttle from Jing'an was pretty frequent: 2-3/hour. Journey time was similar to catching a taxi (i.e. about 1 hour).

The Pearl

by etrehumain

One of the most impressive thing i saw in my life most be the Pearl Tower in Shanghai. This amazing structure (at 468m or 1535 feet) is the third highest in the world right now. It's worth the price to go up there in the space module (at 342m or 1122 feet). And don't forget to walk on the Bund side at night to see the Pearl become a big disco ball. You won't believe your eyes...

Old Town

by Jim_Eliason

Traditional Chinese architecture, market and restaurants. One could spend all day just wandering through the streets and temples of Old Town.

Strangely enough, the locals also refer to it as "Chinatown".

"Yeah Shanghai, Yeah Shanghai"

I have been here many times, it does develop.
This time,I visited SheShan Hill, at the suburb of Shanghai where Shanghai Observtory located.
There is a very old telescope here made by french people in 1900, and surprisingly it still works.
And there is a church on the top of the hill, it looks very beautiful.
But the problem is, when I come back to Beijing, I found there was somthing wrong with my poor camera, it's a pity I lost all my photoes!
