Flights from Beijing to Xian.
Hi my husband and I are going to Beijing soon.
We only have a day to go see the terracotta warriors in Xian.
Flights are 1hr 45 mins. We would like to leave morning and return evening and do this as a day trip.
We would be grateful if anybody has an idea of flights costs, taxi prices from airport to soilders etc, where to book the flights?
Thanks uk bird
Re: Flights from Beijing to Xian.
Flight prices depend on how much discount you can get.
Can you afford 2N1D? It would be better to take the comfortable overnight sleeper trains there and back. Only 400/417 RMB for soft sleeper upper/lower bunk, and no delayed flights to waste your time.
Re: Flights from Beijing to Xian.
We were in Xi'an two weeks ago and had a taxi with driver and guide organised by John (johnqingg2004@yahoo.com.cn). He works for Xi'an CITS. It will probably cost you around 500 Yuan (50 EUR). It took us in total 4 hours to get from the centre to the Terracotta warriors and back to the train station. If you take a night train from Beijing to Xi'an, you will be in Xi'an in the morning and have an extra 4 hours to see the gems of Xi'an (Drum and Bell Tower, City Wall, Big Goose Pagoda), also worthwile visiting. The night train back to Beijing leaves at night around 8 pm (which by the way can also be booked by John). You can take the soft sleeper (sleeps 4 in one compartment) for about 400 Yuan. But you can also, like we did, take the deluxe soft sleeper (sleeps 2 in one compartment with private bathroom) for about 800 Yuan, which is still cheaper than a flight + accomodation.
However, if you would like to fly, you can book through www.elong.net (which we used for other destinations).

I also took the night train soft sleeper from Beijing to Xi'an during May 2007. We were in a cabin for 4 with a Chinese couple we did not know. However, it was interesting to try to communicate. We also met some westerns on the train from Europe. We were the only people from the US on this train that I know of. The train arrived early in the morning. We spend several days in Xi'an to see several things.
If you just plan to spend one day and leave that night, I recommend having your transportation between the train station and the warriors arrange before you leave Beijing. I have several web sites listed for air flights in China on my China Transportation tips. Usually, the closer you book to the departure date, the bigger the discount the flight will be.
However, I like what ellyse and Helga recommendations for the night train. I'm sure you know that only one day will be rushed.
