Yungang Caves, World Heritage by sachara
There are not only very colorful Buddha's, also the walls and ceilings around these statues and reliefs are beautifully carved and painted. You can find very detailed Buddhist stories and Indian gods and goddesses, like Vishnu and Shiva.We visited these caves in 1991 and I was very happy to hear that these caves were inscribed at the World Heritage List in 2001 because the assemblage of statuary of the Yungang Caves is a masterpiece of early Chines Buddhist case art , the caves represent the succesful fusion of Buddhist religious symbolic art from south and central Asia with Chinese cultural traditions and because the Buddhist tradition of religious cave-art achieved its first impact at Yungang, where it developed it's own distinct character and artistic power.
