This old sculpture of an ox is at Shanhua Temple in Datong. I have studied my guide-books and found nothing about it. I remember, that this sculpture is very famous in China. There is a similar one in the Summer-Palace in Beijing.
If somebody can tell me more about it, please do so!!
When I came back in 2009 I did not find the ox anymore. But people remembered the statue and told me, that it is now in a museum, as it is very old and very valuable.
The halls of the Xuanggong Si have very colorfully decorated roofs, walls, doors and windows. The contrast between the rough cliffs and the fine shaped buildings is striking.
In the halls you can find 80 statues of gods and Buddha's. There is also a statue of Confucius. The statues are made of different materials like stone, iron and clay.
In this hanging monastery you can find Taoist, Buddhist and Confucian elements together. This mixture is very rare in China.
Datong can be reached by train from Beijing. If you only wish to make a daytrip, there is a night train to / from Beijing that gets you into Datong early enough for a full day's worth of sightseeing. (An easy option is to search out the CITS agent who meets the train in the morning. If the train is delayed, the tour usually is delayed to match.)
