In some caves, all facing south, we found beautifully colored Buddha's.
It's incredible that these original colors have survived the many centuries.
The artistic work at the Yungang caves was done by 40.000 craftsmen under supervision of Buddhist artists. This work was ended at the moment the Northern Wei dynasty moved their capital to Luoyang in the 5th century.
The colours of the hanging monastery are amazing. The best time for a visit is in the morning, when the sun is shining at the monastery. We did, but it was raining that day and very cloudy.
It is better not to have fear of heights, because it's very narrow and steep and there are no high fences or no fences at all at some places. When we visited it was also very slippery because of the heavy rainfall.
Gosh, when I added this page i had not realised how many towns called Datong there were in China - a selection of one for nearly every province came up! This town, on the edge of Inner Mongolia is no beauty spot. More a smokestack spot with its many coal mines. Nevertheless, it was the highlight of our short journey to China in September 2000. It had great food, and two A grade sights in the vicinity
