Train travel to/from Pingyao
by shaw1881
In May I am planning to take the high speed (X19) train from Beijing to Xian. On the way back from Xian instead of doing the same, I am considering taking an overnight train to Pingyao and then the next night from Pingyao to Beijing.
Does anybody have experience with the Xian -> Pingyao and/or Pingyao->Beijing trains? Can you sleep in the compartments (soft sleeper) or is there too much noise from the train making so many stops.
Also, how hard is it to get tickets. I read somewhere that Pingyao is a small place and doesn't get a very large allotment of sleeper berths.
Thanks

Z19, not X19. I presume that was a typo.
It depends on your sleeping habits. If you're an extremely light sleeper, or unused to sleeping in a new environment, then I suppose you might have some problems.
Contact your guesthouse in Pingyao in advance to have them pre-buy tickets for you.
Travel Tips for Pingyao
Chinese city, chinese tourists
by aukjejetty
When I was there in 2000, Pingyao was still not in the most important guidebook [LP], but my travelpartner knew this place and wanted me to see it. Well, it was because of that a true chinese experience. There were almost no other tourists then chinese. There was a lot of touristshops and eating places, but not the fancy ones they built for western tourist [like the hotelcomplexes around Angkor, Cambodia] small eateries, and modest places to stay. And ofcourse little shops with all kind of stuff that should bring you good luck!

The Rishengchang
by Paul2001
The Rishengchang is the first bank ever incorporated in China. It was founded in 1824 and is representative of the fact that Pingyao was at onetime a very important financial centre of China. This was also one of the first banks in the world to use cheques. Pingyao fell on hard times when the ruling dynasty abdicated in 1912 and defaulted on their loans. Today it is a small museum with life-size dioramas of banking life in China during the 19th century. There are also many halls you can explore which were used as meeting rooms. There are also offices full of period artifacts used by the bankers and clerks durng the 19th century. This was one of the more interesting attractions in Pingyao and if you are pressed for time while visiting I would definitely make my way here above all the other sites.
The museum is open from 9am to 5pm daily and admission is included on the city ticket.
Cruel Statues
by aukjejetty
In the Temple of the City God there, the sculptures are all in beautiful colors. It is the most interesting temple I have seen. It is different from most temples, especialy the devil-hall. It is horrible how they warn the Buddhists not to do bad, otherwise... well click on the pic, and you'll see!
Confucian Temple
by Willettsworld
This temple is located in the south-east of the town, virtually opposite the Temple of the City God. The main building, Dacheng Hall, was repaired in the 3rd year of the reign of Emperor Jindading (1163), 240 to 700 years before the ones in Beijing and Nanjing. There are 87 sculptures of Confucius and his disciples at the site, which is the largest number in any temple. The Confucius Temple possesses a Ming Dynasty examination paper with the highest score for that year, as attested by the emperor’s writing on it, the only one remaining from the 1300 years of the Confucian imperial examination.
