Asking about Pingyao

by Dedlim

Hi,
I'm currently in Beijing feeling bored and have a plan visiting Pingyao during this mid autumn festival, I have several questions, hope some of you can help me
1.How crowded is PIngyao during October holiday period ?is it a bad idea to visit during this time ?
2.If I decide to visit Pingyao, does 1 one day is enough to explore most of the interesting landmarks in this city so I don't have to find hotel (arrive early in morning and leave at night) ?
3.What is the must-see and must-visit place in Pingyao, how can I reach them for instance from train station?
4.How about transportation in Pingyao ? does using public bus is esay : cleary sign, crowded etc, how much the taxi charge ?

Thanks in advance
Sorry for asking so much questions

Cheers
Deddy

hi there.

1.I am not sure how crowded.
2.it is not so bad an idea to visit during this time,i think.
3.from taiyuan train station, it will spend you about one and a half hour to pingyao by public bus. but the public bus arrives at county instead of pingyao. It will take you about another half an hour to pingyao.you can calculate you time.
3.must see: ri sheng chang, the old street of Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty, the old city wall etc.
4.within pingyao,it is ok just to walk, for it is not so big,it is small.
taxi charge: just talk with the driver. he will charge 200-300 yuan, but 100 yuan or so is ok(at least more than one hour on the road)

Thank you for the answer, so do you think I can just walk to explore the city form Pingyao train station because my plan is to take train from Beijing directly to Pingyao.
Another thing is : is it hard to get the return ticket to Beijing as I won't stay overnight in Pingyao ?

Thanks in advance
Deddy

Travel Tips for Pingyao

Incienso/ Incense

by elpariente

En los templos queman incienso , de todos los tamaños , según las posibilidades de las personas , como ofrenda y para pedir algún deseo
Aparte del humo que puede haber en algún momento es muy agradable su olor y ver los incensarios de bronce que están a la puerta de los templos

Chinese burn in their temples , of all sizes, according to the economy of people , as an offering or to ask any desire
Apart from the smoke that may not so nice in some moments , it is very pleasant to smell it and to see the bronze incense burners that are at the door of the temples

Guided tour through the town

by Museeuw

We only had one dag in Pingyao and hadn't prepared our trip at all, so we just went to the tourist agency and rented a guide. We paid 80 RMB for our personal guide for a whole day. She was really good and actually really funny also. She only spoke Chinese; I don't know if you can get English-speaking guides there though. We almost saw the whole town, with the town wall, the first bank in China, the (small) museum about money transport, the courthouse and jail,... . Most of these places are quite small and so so on the interesting level. For me the nicest part was walking on the city wall and having a view on the city, and the courthouse/jail was also ok.

The tourist agency where we found our guide is near the south gate.

ShuangLin Temple

by easysunshine01

"Shuanglin Temple, originally named Zhongdu Temple, is located in Qiaotou village, six kilometers southwest of the city. In the northern Song Dynasty, in order to memorialize Buddha who attained Nirvana under two trees in a forest, it was changed into "Shuanglin, "shuang" meaning "two or double", and "Lin" meaning "forest". It was rebuilt in 571. Repaired several times, the existing buildings were constructed in the Ming Dynasty."

I rent an electronic power cycle to Shuanglin temple. The round trip costed 20RMB returned from where started. The owner of the cycle would wait for your visit. Only that was a very cold and windy day, but the air was fresh.

The temple is famous for its painted sculptures and pendant style sculptures. Inside the temple, there are over 1,500 sculptures made of painted clay over a wooden framework. Shuanglin Temple is only temple in China preserved a great amount original painted sculpture without any rennovation, it is called the "Oriental Treasure House of Painted Sculptures".

Perderse en sus calles/Getting lost on its streets

by elpariente

Walking along the streets, bypassing the Chinese groups of tourists, is something unforgettable, looking their houses, the people and their habits
You can see their tower or to go to any of the gates of the wall and to stroll in the narrow streets , in which at every step you are surprised , by a building with his yards, his doors, his lintels ... or any corner

Iglesia / Church

by elpariente

Paseando por las calles de Pingyao , encontramos una iglesia Católica , que siempre es curioso verla en estas latitudes
parecida a las que tenemos por aquí pero con los avisos en Chino

Walking the Pingyao streets , we met a Catholic Church . it is always curious to see it on this latitudes
Similar to those we have here , but with the notices in Chinese
