From Shanghai to Pingyao
by matjung
Hi,
I am going to visit some heritage sites in China.
One of them is Pingyao.
Is there an airport near this place, or how would you travel from Shanghai to Pingyao?
Also I am curious to find out for travel connections between Pingyao and Luoyang?

I found a company which offered a flight from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport to
Taiyuan Wusu Airport for 200 USD.
Which airlines offer discount flights?
Day of travel is 14th June (in the morning)
I read that bus 201 links the airport with the railway station.
How long will it take by train from Taiyuan to Pingyao.
How often do the trains go?
I read that the coach needs two hours, how frequently are the buses.
All help is welcome.
Regards
Matjung

Take overnight train Shanghai -- Taiyuan, then a train/long-distance bus for Taiyuan -- Pingyao. The train will save you travel time and also cost (accommodation for the night).
The nearest airport is Taiyuan.
Taiyuan -- Pingyao takes about 1.5 hours by train. Buses for this route typically leave whenever full, I think.

There's a direct Pingyao -- Luoyang train: K237/K240 (0103--1139, 10h36min)
However I anticipate getting decent (ie sleeper) tickets for this train, a better idea would be to try getting a train for Taiyuan -- Zhengzhou, then another train/long-distance bus for Zhengzhou -- Luoyang.
Travel Tips for Pingyao
For the glory of China!

On leaving the train from Xi'an in Pingyao my daughter lost her wallet. Within an hour we were informed that we had left a suitcase at the station. We were lost in translation, because we had all our belongings. Until my daughter wanted to buy a ticket .... no wallet.
Our hotel, TianYuanKui, helped us contacting the police and the suitcase turned out to be a wallet. A traveller on the train had found it and it had been handed over to the police. She donated this banner to the police. She asked it to express: ' Police, you're better than Mick Jagger'. But we doubt that that message is on the text.
Kuixing Tower
by Paul2001
Kuixing Tower is one of the lovelier towers that you find along the City Walls of Pingyao. Compared to the other towers, it is quite elaborately designed. It has an eight sided pavilion the rises above the ramparts. The Kuixing Tower is located on the southeast section of the walls in an area that does not receive the hordes of tourists that fill Pingyao.
Traditional Chinese Culture
by aukjejetty
Besides the appealing dwelling houses of Wang's and Qiao's compounds, Pingyao is also famous for the old lanes and streets from the ancient time.
Passing a three-tiered tower, 18 meters high at the northern end of the Xida Jie (Xida-street), built during the Ming Dynasty, you will enter the famous Ming and Qing Street (also called Nanda Jie) - a best place to explore traditional Chinese culture.
Since this place has not been in the Lonely Planet guidebook until 2001, it is still more a Chinese tourist place than a foreign one. I loved that about this place, since you don't find western restaurant and western tourist shop. All the shops along Ming and Qing street are focusing on Chinese tourist. How long will it last...
Go up the landmark of Pingyao
by albaaust
The Bell Tower is a rather ornate brick and wooden building and is very much a landmark in the old part of Pingyao. It is a three storeyed tower, 18.5 m high and spans the Southern Main Street. A north-south passage runs through the bottom storey. The top storey has a good view of the ancient city.
The steps leading up to the tower are quite narrow and slippery so be careful. Also watch for overhead beams.
The cost of entry is not included in the ticket.
See what happens when you go to hell! The Town God’
by albaaust
This temple consists of the town god, health god, kitchen god’s temple and a Taoist yard.
One interesting aspect of this temple is the eastern hall which is called Hades and depicts judges and ghosts from all ways of life. This seems to show what might happen to you in “hell”. The models are very graphic!! The kids will have nightmares if they see this display.
Climb the very last building to the top and you get a great view of the main street below.
