Home from Home
Sim's Cozy Guest House has moved from it's convenient location, and old building, right next to the Wenshu Temple since the last edition of Lonely Planet, but when we turned up and found this out to our dismay, we discovered that all was not lost. They are running a free transfer by car to the new location (June 09, not sure how long it will last for), and thankfully it's not too far away, just a little way north across the river.
At 160Y per night for a double, it's a little pricier than it used to be too, but although I believe a couple of the other hostels are cheaper, I doubt you get as much value for your money. The rooms are really well appointed with raised wooden beds, a welcoming bowl of fruit, TV and DVD player, AC and of course an nice en-suite bathroom with some free toiletries. There's a large selection of DVDs down in the lobby which are free to borrow (10Y deposit), a huge library of books to borrow or swap, a bar, games room, internet cafe (3Y per hour), and restaurant, lots of lounging space in the communal areas (great if you're in a dorm), and a helpful travel desk. They run several trips - we took the one to the Panda Research Breeding Base, as it made it a lot easier and cheaper to get there, and we also booked our Three Gorges Trip through them as it saved quite a bit of money.
All in all, highly recommended; I'd definitely go back to stay there again.
Unique Quality: They have a nice little garden in the courtyard with, apparently, frogs and rabbits etc, although I didn't see any.
Nice & Laidback Hostel
Owned by a Singaporean (Sim) together with his Japanese wife, this hostel/guesthouse provides services a traveller would appreciate, especially advises/bookings to Lhasa/Tibet.
I got a room for myself (RMB 120 - Price Sept 2005), a double bed, attached bathroom (with hot shower), a tv + dvd player... not bad.
Of course there are dorm beds (check out their website for the latest prices)...
Located near the Wenshu temple (2-5 minutes walk) and transportation (buses) are convenient.
Unique Quality: Quiet and very relaxing ambience.
A small and cosy bar just near the reception area.
When I was there, they had the Full Moon party - free mooncakes.. :-)
Directions: Near Wenshu temple.
Awesome accommodation choice
After a week of soul-less Western five-stars in Shanghai, I wanted somewhere a little more personal to stay when I went to Chengdu. (Yeah, I also wanted something damn cheap, as the company clock stopped ticking the moment I checked out of Pudong).
Sim's Cozy Guesthouse is located on an interesting sidestreet, about two minutes from Wenshu Temple. It has dorms and doubles, but for Y100 per night I sprang for a single with A/C and bathroom.
Unique Quality: This place is great! Lovely staff (all trilingual; I could practice my Chinese, Japanese and vaguely rusty English all with the same person!), tasty restaurant, internet room, DVD player in the rooms (which I didn't use but a nice touch), a bar, lovely garden/chill out area, a cozy reading room and great organised tours.
Very relaxing place to hangout for a few days while seeing the sights of Sichuan. Highly recommended.
Directions: Between Renmin Zhong Lu and Beidai Jie, by Wenshu Temple
One of the coziest guesthouse
I haven't stayed here yet (even visit Chengdu niether), but definitely will stay when I visit Chengdu. This guesthouse is run by a Japanese and a SIngaporean couple and I hear often it well spoken of.
actually, it's my friend stayed there for a couple of days and i have visited him there. it's in downtown, but a quiet place with convineint transportation. very close with Wenshu Temple. For the facility insied, it's good enough for a budget traveller.
Unique Quality: friendly atmosphere, full of travellers from other country.
Very good option
Not Sam's. Sim's. Located away from the expat and backpacker parts of town, this place has a full array of facilities including movies, internet, laundry, a small bar, a fish pond, travel services, etc. The building is a beautiful Sichuan-style structure. Easy place in which to relax. Dorm bed cost Y20 IIRC.
Directions: Near the Wenshu Temple. Often they have staff hanging around the temple are to guide you from there.
A jewel in Chengdu !
This newly open place, is run by a singapore-japanese couple.
The place is an old official building of Chengdu, all in traditiotnal chinese style including a pond.
Sim has arranged the place especially to suit backpacker needs.
The prices (from 30 to 90 Y) are very competitive and it is super clean !
Paid 80 Y for a double room with fan.
Pls note that till now all bathroom and toilets are shared !
Unique Quality: Super friendly staff, super clean room and backpacker atmosphere !
Travel agency in the premises, book shelves and internet.
I am sorry to say that the restaurant is a real disaster except for fruit salad !
Directions: close to wushu temple !
