Leshan Giant Buddah

by dillieuk

I only have a short time (2weeks) in China. I am visiting friends situated in Gansu province and am not sure if it is worth spending 1 or 2 days in Chengdu and visiting the Leshan Giant Buddah. Any suggestions?

My VT picture is me at the Giant Buddha. It was very interesting but also very crowded. You would have to take a day or overnight trip from Chengdu to Leshan to see the Buddha.

I read someplace they plan to cover the Buddha in some type of structure in the future.

As long as you are not cutting anything out, I would recommend it. You should also see the Pandas and other sights when you are in Chengdu.

It is worth to spend time in Leshan. You can do one day trip from Chengdu. I was there last spring in the morning on workingday, there were only very small group of tourist, no lineup by the Giant Buddha strairs. The thousand Buddha cave and the beautiful park is worth to visit too. If you enter from that Park you buy 2 tickets one for the garden and one for the giant Buddha. There is small trail from the garden leads you to Giant Buddha. They kept my backpack for 3Y while I tour around the park. Make sure you get there in early morning.

Gansu is a lit bit far from Chengdu unless you take a flight from Yinchuan. I do not suggest you visit Chengdu and Leshan for only 1-2 days.

Once you enter Sichuan, you might be in a dilemma whether you sould extend your trip in Sichuan or not, since Sichuan is so beautiful. You may see my homepage for some details.

Hey!
i just came from chengdu and lijiang.i spend 3 days in chengdu..it's just a city and the weather is ***.i went to the panda breeding center, that was great!but the other dfays it was just raining.the buddha is ment to be really nice.so if ypu go to chengdu, try to get out of the city and have a look around the siurroundings.
but i would recommend lijiang, southwest of chengdu.it has a boring new town area and a beautiful old town(UNESCO world heritage).this is much nicer than chengdu!the weather is better and the surroundings are beautiful:tiger leaping gorge(2days trek),town of "Baishan",which i can really recommend.that seems to be the "old china".

i hope i could help!
save travels!

Why Yinchuan? That's in Ningxia province. Lanzhou is the capital of Gansu province.

Travel Tips for Chengdu

Marketstreets, snacks

by sachara

In the marketstreets you could not only buy fresh or dried food to bring home.
There were teastalls for drinking a nice cup of tea. You could also take a warm snack at the roadside. I liked especially the bapao, steamed bread filled with meat or vegetables.

Relaxing walk

by Museeuw

I didn't really pay attention on Du Fu's cottage or on the information about him, but, as we just got of the airplane, it was really relaxing to walk around in the parc or garden around the cottage. The weather was nice, the trees were green, the flowers were blossoming and it was absolutely calm and quiet here. Nice!

Base of Mt Emei

by Green_Frog

There's also a section at the base of Mt Emei depicting the legend of Kung Fu where it is said this martial arts originated from the monks of Mt Emei - the monastery is still a major reason for visiting Mt Emei and known as the 'spiritual mountain'. You can stay with the monks in the monastery up on the mountain for a small fee.
