There are lots nice place in or around Chengdu. Accroding your father's age, you can select some easy place to visit. Some suggestions are Chunxi road, WuHouCi, JinLi, KuangZhaiXiang, Base of Panda, Dujiangyan which is about 50km from the city and Sanxingdui which is in Deyang, not far from chengdu.

There are some other beautiful place such as Qingcheng mountain, but it is not suitable for old people.

I would recommend a visit to the Giant Panda Breeding and Research Station and trip to see the giant Buddha at Leshan.

The Buddha can be viewed two ways - from the top you can walk down a lot of stairs but then you have to climb up again so it depends on how fit your father is at 73 - the other is from a boat on the river.

In Chengdu city itself is the huge people's square one of the largest statues of Chairman Mao. There are also dancing fountains at night - maybe not in winter.

I recommend the following places in Chengdu:
1. Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
2. Du Fu Thatched Cottage, called "Du Fu Cao Tang" in Chinese.
3. Jinli Street and Wuhou Temple
4. The Wide and Narrow Alleys, called "Kuan Zhai Xiang Zi" in Chinese
5. Jinsha Site Mesuem
6. Sichuan Provincial Museum
7. Wangjianglou Park

Actually, "Sanxingdui" mentioned by barefootonbeach is located at Guanghan which is about 40km away from Chengdu.

Travel Tips for Chengdu

Vegetables by bike.

by sachara

As at every market in the world there were a lot of vegetables for sale in the market streets of Chengdu. There were a lot of stalls, but I saw also many streetvendors coming on their bicycles with two huge baskets hanging at both sides.
The baskets were filled abundantly with all kind of green vegetables. These vegetables looked very fresh as if they came directly from the fields.

the joy of Chengdu

Going to the Panda research center is really a must.
I am not really into the zoo or animal stuff but I must admit that I really fall in love this those animals.
They are so cute and so "human" in their own way !
Go early @ around 08.00. Their breaksfast time so you may get more chance to see them in "action". FANTASTIC !!!!!!!!!

Sichuan University Museum

by mke1963

Sichuan University Museum is a superb set of collections and themese housed in a non-descript building alongside the Jin river. It's just a few hundred metres from the River-Viewing Pavilion and its nice park. sadly, the museum has an irritating no-photography policy despite there being absolutely no rationale for this. Unfortunately my camera shutter went off accidentally while I was looking at some interesting exhibits.

There is no guide book although there is a photocopied sheet of paper providing some information. No matter, most of the well-lit and well displayed exhibits have a basic label in Chinese and English and some explanatory displays as well.

The top floor is not really worth the effort unless you have a particular interest in porcelain or calligraphy and have not had the chance to see the displays in bigger museums in Shanghai, Beijing or Nanjing.
The middle floor is a single L-shaped gallery on Sichuan's minorities, with some good - if simplistic and "China focused" labels, as well as a good range of traditional costumes. About the half the dispaly area is given over to Tibetans, but several other groups are well represented, including the Tujia, Qiang and Miao.
The ground floor has a whole range of objects:it's all a big mix but it's all also very interesting.
Down in the basement is the star attraction, with spectacular exhibits of sculptures and stone artefacts in one room (many from Sanxingdui - but none of the "treasures"); next to it is a very good display of archaeological sites in Sichuan. Sichuan University is one of the leading archaeological institutes in China.

For those specifically interested, the museum has an interesting history and the papers of Daniel Dye, the original benefactor of the museum are at Yale University and available for reading.
