none: camping along a stream

by tompt

In Tibet it is legal to set up your tent in the mountains. Here we camped along the road to the Zhigung monastery. Next to the camp was a small stream with icecold water, not nice to wash in the next the morning.....
The tents were owned by the organisation that organised the trip, we only brought our own matras and sleeping bag. The truck moved our things. And they set up camp before we arrived, cooked dinner and breakfast.

Anywhere!: Camping on the Tibetan Plateau - excellent option!

by Claus_Qvist

Due to the lack of other accomodation than the Chinese governed ones (where you as a tourist is forced to pay a huge overprice), bringing a tent and a warm sleeping bag is not a bad idea, especially if you count on doing a bit of travelling off the beaten track.

Western Tibet is perfect for camping and so is the Everest Region. As campgrounds don't exist, everything is done "wild", however, beware not to stay too close to the villages. Though most people are extremely friendly, some villages don't like tourists at all, or you might encounter one of the unpleasant mastiff dogs.

If you do happen to stay close to a village, ask permission first, just to avoid and unpleasant experiences.

Kirey Hostel: The most practical hostel

by voyage_lam

We stayed there for a few days, in a quadrable. It's very clean, cheap (RMB20 per head), and easily accessible. The only thing was the toilet. Be aware. The travel agent Zha-Xi is especially helpful and down to earth. Look for him!

It offers no great facilities, but it's very clean. On the second floor, you will be able to see great mountain views, esp. in the morning when you just wake up. All so refreshing!

NLBC: Namtso Lake BC, the Best in Tibet

by 1W1V

Newly built (2004), the place is bright and the staff friendly.
Despite the lack of competition, the price is reasonable @ 80 Y for a bed (rooms have 3 or 4 beds).
The place is super clean.
Only problems : generator which provides electricity to the camp and the Karaoke in the middle of the courtyard allowing all rooms to enjoy it !!!!

The food there is very ok and the price once again reasonable.
To me, staying overnight in Namtso lake is a must !!!

Ticket office for EBC: Shegar recovery center !

by 1W1V

So exhausted after EBC and all the tough road we had from Lhassa to Shigatse via Gyantse, we decided to stop in Shegar to relax and rest.
The look for one hour to find out a decent accomodation in Shegar but we eventually end up at the place where you buy the entrance ticket to EBC.
The place is a kind of Baghdad Cafe, in the middle of nowhere.
The room are ok but no water unless you harass the management to open the tap !
Price is ok @ 50 Y per bed (2 beds per room) and the room looks clean.

If the hotel is Baghdad cafe 1, the restaurant is probably Baghdad cafe 2.
More expensive than usual but the food was ok.
A decent stop-over place if you don't really feel the 11 hours trip between EBC and Shigatse.

Everest Base Camp: Ok for one night

by 1W1V

Staying at the Everest Base Camp is probably a good option especially in summer.
The tents are ok, some have a cement slap and I would reccomand to go for that sort of "comfort".
The average price is between 20 to 30 Y per bed. They ususally provide free tea and blankets are plenty.
Pls note that I stayed there in July 2004 and it was freezing at night !!
No "real" toilet or bathroom. Nature is queen there.

Despite the location and the limited competition, the price were very ok including drinks and food.
Wake-up at 06.00 in the morning and your first sight is his majesty Everest

Denzing Hotel: The only one which seems ok/affordable

by 1W1V

260 Y for a double room which seems pretty new but lack water !!!!
The bed sheets are changed only if you ask for ! so be aware of that !
The staff is not really friendly but ask them to change the sheets were probably a bit too much for them to be nice afterwards.
One more thing, this hotel is often full in summer and all the drivers want to park the car inside the small compound. If you want an early departure, pls check if your car is not blocked by others !!! usual driver trick to get some extra sleep !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

none

Kiychu Hotel: better but more expensive

by 1W1V

Room are better than snowland or banak shol. The bathroom is also better. The place looks cleaner but is that worth 260 Y for a double (twin bed) ????
In fact, I stayed there because all the others were full and I was quite happy to find this hotel.

Super friendly staff !!!

snowland hotel - Lhassa: not bad at all !!! best alternative to Banak Shol

by 1W1V

Stay there in July 2004.
Paid 150 Y for a double room (always twin bed) selfcontained bathroom with 24/7 hot water.

Quiet place at a stone step of Barkhor square.
Nice staff, good ad board and also FIT in the premises.
Snowland restaurant (next door), the best in town !!!

Banak shol: best ratio price/quality in Lhassa

by 1W1V

I have stayed there in July 2004.
The accomodation is ok and the price very interesting as I paid 120 Y for a double room with bathroom and 24/7 hot water !
To me, the "western" wing is far better than the tibetan style room but depend on what you want and what you like.

Good ad board there and FIT travel agency to make you life easy.
Strangely, they clean your room everyday and change the towel but the room staff do not make your bed.
Free laundry !!! but no ironing !!
