Transportation for Lhasa

by sanluipal

Hi! I will be in chengdu and I would like to visit Lhasa. It is posible to go from chengdu to lhasa by train? Thanks, Sandra

There is one train from Chengdu to Lhasa:

You have to organize this through a local travel agency to get the permit for Tibet.

Happy travels

You can also take the train from Chengdu to Xining. All trains to Lhasa pass through Xining. Xining has a high altitude (but still less than Lhasa), and you can adjust there before heading to Lhasa if you want. Train tickets are very hard to get, though. Maybe by the time you try it will be easier. Good luck!

Yes, possible. There's a train originating from Chengdu, or you could go via Xining as other posters have suggested.

Last time I took the train from Lhasa to Chengdu, it went around Xining, Lanzou and to Chengdu. So it a long way, I recall spent 2 night.

It's a 48hr train ride from Chengdu to Lhasa. The best views would be on the last 12-16 hours of the leg when you are on the shangri-la plateau.

Re: Transportation for Lhasa

Have also heard that the scenery is nicer coming out from Lhasa rather than going in.

Re: Transportation for Lhasa

by reeya

That's exactly what I said :) But I would recommend flying out if you can. The view of the brown colored mountainous terrain (usually covered in ice) is awesome.

its a long journey taking a train.I prefer taking bus and the scenery is great on road318

Re: Transportation for Lhasa

I don't think that option is possible for non-PRC citizens.

Travel Tips for Lhasa

by yuk13

Due to the high altitude, it is highly recommended to get there by train and bus instead of directly arrive at Lhasa Airport by air. Normally, you need to figure out your visiting plan in the first few days very carefully in order that your body has time to adapt to the high altitude. You can visit and explore the great Tibet of wide variety only if you can manage the harsh environment first.

Praying

by tompt

As Lhasa ia a main pilgrim destination you will see many people praying. Praying can be done in several ways. You can turn your prayerwheel, sending your prayers to heaven. Or recite a mantra like Om mani padme hum. Also you can kneel to laying down on the ground. The people you see in the picture are praying in front of the Jokhang.

You must bring polarized sunglasses!

by Confucius

Pack light! I suggest that you don't bring your best luggage and bags. Take a bag that can withstand dusty conditions. Bring long sleeve light cotton shirts, polarized sunglasses, and a hat Sunscreen and a box of Kleenex tissues Bring extra batteries for your digital camera and enough disk memory for 1000 photos. One thing I did not use was mosquito repellent. Of the above items, a hat can be purchased cheaply in Lhasa. The rest should be bought elsewhere before arrival in Tibet. You can find cowboy hats with the Chicago Bulls logo for as low as 40 yuan (US $5) as well as simple caps for 10 yuan ($US 1.50) at department stores and small shops throughout Lhasa.

You might want to bring instant noodles if you will be taking the train from Lhasa to Golmud or beyond. The selection of instant noodles in Lhasa stores is rather limited.

The Tibet Game

by duke0123

Not really an off the beaten path item, but an interesting visit is The Tibet Game.
On this site you can play a game. The goal of this game is to reach the Nirvana. During this game you can view images of Tibet.
