Travel Tips for Turpan

Astana Ancient Tombs

by dahcky

Astana Ancient Tombs, situated about 40 kilometers to the southeast of Turpan, used to serve as the cemetery of the citizens of Gaochang from 273 in the Western Jin Dynasty to 778 in the Tang Dynasty.

History

by nepalgoods

Today's Turpan is the center of a big oasis on the north route of silkroad. This fertile area has been attractive to merchants with their caravans and nomads with their herds. Since more than 2000 years have been settlements in this oasis. You'll find the remains of big cities and glorious past around modern Turpan: the ruins of Gaochang, which had been a prosperous city during the Tang-Dynasty, and of Jiaohe, and also the famous Thousand Buddha Caves of Beziklik. In an old graveyard near Gaochang archaeologists excavated hundreds of 2000 year old tomkbs. Some with nice frescoes, some with well preserved mummies.

Now Turpans has about 300000 inhabitants. It is a pleasant and quiet city with broad streets and not many highrise buildings.

Goats

by victorwkf

Goats are very important in Turpan, in fact in the whole region of central Asia in general. As such, you will see these animals everywhere in Turpan. You should try eating the delicious mutton dishes while in Turpan and other parts of Xinjiang.

Packing List

by bokononist

Wear good hiking shoes, if you're walking around the ancient cities you're going to be doing some hilly terain. This is a good idea anywhere in China, actually, there's always a lot to see and the best way is by foot or bike. Bring a hat or buy one there to block the sun and stay cool. Also, if you're going to wear shorts have some kind of wrap to tie around your waist that will cover your legs in case you want to go in a mosque; it's pretty liberal here but be respectful of the Muslim customs. Sunscreen, maybe aloe for sunburns. It's really sunny and hot out this way so keep that in mind. Bring a sun shield attachment for your lenses to block out any harsh rays.
Be careful in the desert - I got sand in my telephoto lens and it's still driving me nuts today. Film is available but don't buy it from the outdoor stands; it may have been sitting out for a long time in the heat so you're better off bringing your own.

Turpan Museum

by nepalgoods

Turpan Museum is a small local museum, which most people skip, when visiting Turpan. But I recommend ot visit. Bets way to visit is to take a tourguide with you. I was very lucky, that I had an expert tourguide with me, who showed me aorund in the museum. Unfortunately all exhibits are described in Chinese.

The exhibits show finds from the excavations at Gaochang, Jiaohe and other places. There is also a collection of mummies form the Astana tombs.

Other reasons, why I like the museum: as most museums in China it is a quiet place, no visitors, aircondition. The atmosphere is like in a church: solemn quiete a place, to escape the heat and the dust.

It is located on Gaochang Road, easily can reached by a short walk from Oasis Hotel
